Nintendo product flop crushes shares, outlook crumbles (Reuters)

TOKYO (Reuters) ? Nintendo's shocking profit battered its shares as much as 20 percent, underscoring deep challenges for an iconic brand struggling to win back users flocking to other gadgets.

The plunge wiped off $5 billion from Nintendo's market value after the company said profits would fall to their lowest in 27 years as it braced for losses from its latest 3D gadget.

Brokers cut the company's forecasts, a day after it swung to a quarterly loss and slashed prices of its 3D-capable handheld games device by about a third.

With sales of its DS and Wii fading, Nintendo was relying on the new 3D model to revive profits and fend off renewed competition from motion-gaming peripherals of Sony Corp and Microsoft. Many casual gamers are also flocking to devices such as Apple's blockbuster iPhone and iPad.

"They are standing on the edge," said Yuuki Sakurai, CEO and president of Fukoku Capital Management in Tokyo. "When I ride on the trains I see people using their smartphones to play games and people don't want to overlap their spending on other devices," he said.

The Kyoto-based company must consider providing games to these new platforms rather than focusing on new hardware, Sakurai said.

Nintendo President Satoru Iwata took a 50 percent pay cut, and other executives took 20-30 percent cuts to take responsibility for the poor performance.

The company also reduced sales forecasts for its Wii home games console and the previous generation DS handheld device.

"We needed to do something extremely daring to change the situation, so we decided on the price-cut," said Iwata, a former game designer, who launched the Wii and expanded the gaming population, toppling Sony from the industry's top spot.

Nintendo's shares fell as much 20 percent on Friday to 11,100 yen, its lowest intraday level since May 2004. They ended down 12.2 percent on the day, for a drop this year of nearly 50 percent.

Speaking to reporters in Osaka on Thursday, Iwata acknowledged sales of the much-anticipated 3DS had lost momentum shortly after the launch earlier this year.

"However, by cutting the price before you get economies of scale, of course you make losses on the hardware," he said.

Nintendo sold only 710,000 units of the 3DS in April-June, compared with 3.6 million in the month following its launch, and a tiny fraction of the 16 million unit target for the year to March 2012.

The Wii sold only 1.56 million units, half the figure in the same period last year. The device took the industry by storm five years ago by replacing button clicking with motion control, attracting a new wave of gamers that expanded the market.

Nintendo cut its annual operating profit forecast after market hours on Thursday to 35 billion yen from an initial forecast of 175 billion yen. The new estimate is far short of the previous consensus of 154.9 billion yen based on 24 analysts' forecasts ahead of the results.

UNCERTAIN OUTLOOK

JP Morgan cut its rating on the company behind the Super Mario franchise to "underweight" from "overweight", saying the current situation was worse than feared and the outlook uncertain.

"The timing of the 3DS hardware price cut is surprising, given the major in-house software releases... We believe the 3DS will be a heavy weight on earnings over the medium term. The lack of a share buyback announcement is also disappointing," analyst Hiroshi Kamide said in a report.

Nintendo has been criticized for being too centered on hardware as the market increasingly shifts to a battleground over software, with games played over Internet networks linking millions of players.

"The software wasn't terribly compelling," said Ricardo Torres, editor-in-chief of gamespot.com. "There wasn't enough to do with it," he said.

Japanese electronic companies have been hit by weak consumer spending in North America and Europe.

U.S. consumer spending, which accounts for about 70 percent of the country's economic activity, is expected to have decelerated sharply in the second quarter of 2011 to the weakest level since the end of the 2007-09 recession two years ago.

Shares of Sony Corp also fell on Friday, a day after the Japanese consumer electronics group slashed its outlook for TV sales and cut its full-year net profit forecast to 60 billion yen from 80 billion yen. ($1=77.8 Yen)

Aerobic exercise is that which improves the oxygen system in the body, which in turn benefits the metabolic processes within. As we strengthen our energy-producing systems, we strengthen all the muscles involved with respiration ? our heart and lungs. By bolstering the heart (remember it is a muscle), the pumping efficiency is improved thus leading to a reduced resting heart rate. If the heart is allowed to rest, it will live longer ? and so will you. Additionally, aerobics increase the total number of red blood cells running through our body which means we have more energy, better mental health and stronger muscles.

Alright, aerobic exercise is important but why swimming in particular? The short answer is low-impact. Since the human body is of a similar density as water, we float. The water supports the body, even cushions it; the same cannot be said for running or speed walking. Those with joint problems or who are recovering from an injury find water work and swimming a very non-injurious activity for rehabilitation and exercise. In fact, the resistance experienced as the limbs move through the water mean a higher level of activity can take place without risk of injury. Regular movement and exercise is important at any age, but with the elderly it is important as a means of retaining mobility. Swimming is a wonderful way for the elderly to get their exercise without fear of injury.

How can swimming extend our life? We know that aerobic exercise is important and that being in the water while exercising lowers the instance of injury, but how can swimming in particular be a form of movement that will extend our life? Let?s take a look at a study done by the University of South Carolina to answer that question. Over a 32 year period the team of researchers studied 40,000 men aged 20 to 90 years, enrolled in the Aerobics Center Longitudinal Study. They took into account the subjects age, weight, body mass index, medical history and exercise habits. The first report presented at the 2008 World Aquatic Health Conference showed that men who swam regularly had 50% lower risk of dying than men who ran, walked or led sedentary lifestyles. Also, the swimmers were found to have a higher cardiorespiratory fitness level than the other groups. Dr. Steven Blair, the lead physician in the study, believes this is the main reason for the increased life expectancy among male swimmers. Although the study did not include female subjects, we can assume the results would be similar. There was, however, a report in the New England Journal of Medicine indicating that the practice of swimming as a regular, lifelong form of exercise did lower the instance or breast cancer and miscarriage in women.

Simply from the point of view of safety, it is important for every person of any age learn to swim. One never knows when the need to swim will become a necessity of life. Michael Douglas: Smoking After Beating Throat Cancer?

Is throat-cancer survivor Michael Douglas smoking again, just months after enduring grueling treatment for the disease? Star and Radar say he is.

The photos appear in the new issue of the celebrity gossip tabloid and were allegedly taken July 21. He is shown on a yacht in Porto Venere, Italy.

The legendary actor is clearly smoking in the cover photo, and in more images inside the magazine. The question is when they were really taken.

Michael Douglas went through chemotherapy and radiation last year, bravely beating cancer, making these new photos - if legit - even more stunning.

The oldest, easiest trick in the tabloid book is the file photo, though. Using an old or misleading image to make a cover stand out is par for the course.

We can't guarantee that's what's going on here, but we also wouldn't bet against that. It's worth noting that he was a heavy smoker prior to 2010.

There's also the possibility that he was smoking medicinal marijuana, but even that would still expose Douglas to potentially damaging side effects.

Douglas has yet to comment about the photos.

Patricia Clarkson Joins 'Parks & Recreation' As Tammy 1

There is only one person in this world who strikes fear into the heart of Tammy 2: Tammy 1. And now we know her identity.

TV Line reports that Patricia Clarkson has been cast as the first wife of Nick Offerman's gloriously mustachioed Parks department head Ron Swanson in NBC's Emmy-nominated sitcom, "Parks and Recreation," giving face to a character that has only been mentioned in haunting memories through the first three seasons. The Oscar-nominee will play a psycho who scares the life out of all who enter her path, including Ron's second wife Tammy, played by Megan Mullally.

The casting comes after much speculation this summer, which included, at the behest of Offerman and Mullally, a brief internet campaign -- started here at The Huffington Post -- to get Oprah to agree to take the role.

"We're going to find out who Ron's first ex-wife Tammy is, and I'm excited to find out why Tammy Two is scared sh*tless of Tammy," Offerman said in the early June interview. "We're trying to start a campaign to get Oprah to play Tammy One. I think Oprah would be the only, she's the only person we can think of that might be intimidating to Megan Mullally. It would be so good."

Clarkson, though, is a terrific choice, having just shined in a supporting role as Mila Kunis's sex-crazed mother in "Friends With Benefits"; an upcoming starring turn in "Main Street," an inspirational drama with Colin Firth and Orlando Bloom; and a turn in the coming-soon romance "One Day" with Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess.

Do you think that parenting can be a mission field?

In her article ?Motherhood as a Mission Field? author Rachael Jankovic says that it is. She writes:

The closer you get to home, the less intriguing the work of sacrifice seems. As someone once said, ?Everyone wants to save the world, but no one wants to help Mom with the dishes.? When you are a mother ? your work is normal, because it is as close to home as you can possibly be. You have actually gone so far as to?become home?.

It is easy to become discouraged, thinking that the work you are doing does not matter much. If you were really doing something for Christ you would be out there, somewhere else, doing it. Even if you have a great perspective on your role in the kingdom, it is easy to lose sight of it in the mismatched socks, in the morning sickness, in the dirty dishes.

There are a number of ways in which mothers need to study their own roles, and begin to see them, not as boring and inconsequential, but as?home, the headwaters of missions.

Jankovic says that above all, ?the very heart of the gospel is sacrifice, and there is perhaps no occupation in the world as intrinsically sacrificial as motherhood.?

I would also add ?and fatherhood? to that sentence. Jankovic?s article focuses on motherhood but her words apply for fathers as well. Fathers also sacrifice, clean dirty diapers, lose sleep worry for their children, put meals on the table, and work to shepherd their children?s faith. The principles below apply to one as well as the other. Jankovic?s thoughts should inspire all parents to believe that the calling to have children is a high and worthy one.

Here are a few questions to think about as you read the article:

How might thinking of parenting as a mission encourage us to live more deliberately as families?
It is easy to see how something like wisely stewarding our resources connects to creation care, but how does having strong and godly families and connect to our call to care for creation?
What might missional parenting look like? How might it affect God?s creation for the good?

Indian village organizer among Magsaysay winners (AP)

MANILA, Philippines ? An Indian village organizer and an Indonesian who has helped impoverished rural villages run small hydropower plants are among the six winners of this year's Ramon Magsaysay Awards.

The awards announced Thursday are considered Asia's equivalent of the Nobel Prizes. They are named after a Philippine president who died in a plane crash in 1957.

Nileema Mishra founded a center that has organized self-help groups among Indian villagers. The center extends small loans to villagers for businesses and community projects that help them improve their own lives.

Tri Mumpuni heads a business group that has built community-run hydropower plants in rural Indonesia.

A Cambodian, a Philippine organization, another Indonesian and another Indian were the other winners.

The center founded by Mishra in 1995 started with a self-help group of 14 women, giving small loans and training women to produce food items and export-quality quilts. The center today has some 1,800 self-help groups in 200 villages across India's Maharashtra state.

Its microcredit program has distributed the equivalent of $5 million with a 100 percent loan recovery rate.

The Ramon Magsaysay Award Foundation praised Mishra for organizing Maharashtra's villagers to address "their aspirations and their adversities through collective action and heightened confidence in their potential to improve their own lives."

Mumpuni's business group IBEKA based in West Java has built 60 community-run hydropower plants with 5 to 250 kilowatts capacity. It has provided electricity to 500,000 people in rural Indonesia.

The award body noted her skill and determination in turning IBEKA into an outstanding Indonesian example of social entrepreneurship.

Her compatriot Hasanain Juaini won for going against tradition and opening an Islamic boarding school for girls that integrates learning with community life. The school in West Lombok involves students and teachers in issues like the environment, livelihood and good governance, the award body said.

Cambodian Koul Panha was recognized for his courageous leadership of the Committee for Free and Fair Elections that has mobilized 50,000 election volunteers and trained 150,000 Cambodians on electoral issues. The committee lobbies for reforms in the fragile democracy.

Indian engineer Harish Hande was recognized for establishing a solar power company in Bangalore that has reached more than half a million poor people, installing solar lights in 120,000 households, small enterprises and community facilities.

The company customizes products for the poor like head lamps for night workers, then links their sale to credit from rural banks.

The Alernative Indigenous Development Foundation, a nonprofit based in the central Philippines' Negros Occidental province, won for introducing a pumping system that has transformed the lives of upland communities without easy access to water.

It trains village techinicians and groups to manage the system that uses the natural kinetic energy from rivers or springs to push water uphill without using gas or electicity.

S. Korea flour aid trucks cross border to N. Korea (AFP)

PAJU, South Korea (AFP) ? South Korean trucks loaded with flour aid for North Korea crossed the tense border Tuesday for the first time since the communist country shelled a frontline island last year.

The shipment followed a ceremony attended by some 30 people from the Korean Council for Reconciliation and Cooperation, a Seoul-based civic group, at the Imjingak tourist site near the border.

"We hope our humanitarian aid will lead to fresh inter-Korean ties," council head Kim Deog-Ryong told reporters as 12 trucks carrying a total of 300 tonnes of flour headed for the North Korean city of Sariwon.

The council said it would send some 2,500 tonnes of flour including Tuesday's shipment by the end of August if it wins approval from the Seoul government, which must by law approve all cross-border contacts.

"We believe our aid will play a positive role in creating a favourable mood for inter-Korean dialogue and easing tensions on the Korean peninsula," it said in a statement.

As relations worsened in 2008, Seoul halted an annual government shipment of 400,000 tonnes of rice to its impoverished neighbour, although it allowed some civilian groups to keep sending aid.

Seoul suspended approval for civilian flour shipments after the North's island attack killed four South Koreans including civilians. Seoul officials believe flour can be diverted easily to the military.

Ties with the North are at their lowest ebb in almost a decade. However, South Korea this week allowed Kim's group and another private organisation to send a total of 400 tonnes of flour.

Foreign Minister Kim Sung-Hwan said Monday that unexpected talks last week between nuclear envoys from the two Koreas on the sidelines of a summit in Indonesia opened the way for better ties, but cautioned this would take time.

The North, where hundreds of thousands of people died in a famine in the 1990s, suffers chronic food shortages. This year it asked the United States and other nations for food aid as international assistance dwindled.

United Nations agencies say some six million people urgently need food. The United States sent an aid assessment team in May but no decision has yet been announced.

The European Union said this month that it would deliver 10 million euros in emergency food aid to the country to help 650,000 people at risk of dying.

Train collision in China kills 32, injures 191 (AP)

BEIJING ? A Chinese bullet train crashed into another high-speed train that had stalled after being struck by lightning Saturday in eastern China, causing four carriages to fall off a viaduct and killing at least 32 people and injuring 191 others, state media reported.

The first train was traveling from the Zhejiang provincial capital of Hangzhou when it lost power in the lightning strike and was hit from behind by the second train in Wenzhou city at 8:27 p.m. (1230 GMT), the official Xinhua News Agency said.

The provincial emergency office told Xinhua that at least 32 people were killed and 191 injured.

Early Sunday, Chinese President Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao called for an all-out effort to rescue passengers still trapped in the wreckage hours after the collision, Xinhua said.

A preliminary investigation by the Zhejiang provincial government released early Sunday showed that four coaches of the moving train fell off the viaduct, Xinhua said. The cars plunged about 65 to 100 feet (20 to 30 meters) from the elevated section of track, Xinhua said.

Photos taken at the scene showed one badly damaged car lying on its side by the viaduct and another car leaning against the viaduct after landing on its end..

Xinhua quoted an unidentified witness as saying "rescuers have dragged many passengers out of the coach that fell on the ground."

Minister of Railways Sheng Guangzu, who was heading to the accident scene, ordered an in-depth investigation of the accident.

The trains involved are "D" trains, the first generation bullet train with an average speed of about 95 miles (150 kilometers) per hour and not as fast as the new Beijing-Shanghai line.

Xinhua said the train hit by lightning was "D3115." It said the Ministry of Railways confirmed that it was hit from behind by train "D301."

China has spent billions of dollars and plans more massive spending to link the country with a high-speed rail network. Recently, power outages and other malfunctions have plagued the showcase high-speed line between Beijing and Shanghai since it opened on June 30.

Official plans call for China's bullet train network to expand to 8,000 miles (13,000 kilometers) of track this year and 10,000 miles (16,000 kilometers) by 2020.

The huge spending connected with the rail expansion also has been blamed for corruption, and Railways Minister Liu Zhijun was dismissed this spring amid an investigation into unspecified corruption allegations.

No details have been released about the allegations against him, but news reports say they include kickbacks, bribes, illegal contracts and sexual liaisons.

"Multicultural education in a pluralistic society," by Donna M. Gollnick and Philip C. Chinn, a company, Pearson Merrill Prentice Hall, Upper Saddle River, NJ, (2006), pp 404, ISBN:0-13-119719-3.

This book was very interesting to me, and his first release was in 1983 and was updated and reprinted every few years ago. I felt as if the book was very difficult to use because it has a foreword from the table of contents, making navigation very difficult.
