LG 27-inch Personal Smart TV hands-on (updated: video)

LG 27inch Personal Smart TV handson updated video

Designed for more realistic living quarters, LG's unleashed its Personal Smart TV to the IFA crowds. With a 27-inch, 1,920 x 1,080 IPS display, you'll also find the typical stable of connectivity options, including two HDMI, three USB, component, LAN and SCART connections. The screen seemed well-lit with the IPS panel offering suitably reliable views from most angles. It's a pretty stylish-looking TV too, with a rough metallic finish to the bezel, which while not jaw-dropping, is still suitably narrow. The Smart TV functions were also navigable through LG's Smart Remote, offering a WiiMote-ish approach to media browsing. Our demo model was already packed with German media content -- in both 2D and 3D -- ready for when it launches here next month. It'll be appearing in shops across Europe around the same time, although there's no word on the set landing on US shores. Check out our quick hands-on video after the break.

Maximize Your Business Leads with Facebook and LinkedIn ...

Throughout time, businesses, especially local-based operations, depended largely on what was known once as word-of-mouth that is now, in the full impetus of the online marketing generation, is known as networking.

Online networking basically comes in two formats ? either for business to business or business to consumer. Business to business networking can mean becoming a member of a local marketing Forum who offers to meet on a weekly or even monthly basis to discuss latest trends in the local business community.

Well most of the people at these meetings may not be involved in the same business; they will use these meeting places as an informal means of gathering local information that may result in contact and sales. In some cases networking forums of this nature may become national, multiplying opportunities to harvest leads.

As far as making contacts online with the same goal of lead gathering then one of the biggest mediums these days is undoubtedly LinkedIn, whose member base is growing at a tremendous rate. LinkedIn houses trade forums for every sector of business as well as for service providers covering every trade and industry sector. For any business, large or small, having an employee of two active on LinkedIn is a very worthwhile investment.

facebook-linkedin

Tremendously larger in scale but on a similar theme is Facebook. It goes without saying that the networking possibilities on this media giant are totally unlimited. Geared towards the business to consumer sector, maintaining a Facebook page can bring tremendous opportunities and will generate a tremendous number of business leads. What must be remembered when launching a Facebook page is to be ready for the massive influx of potential clientele and remember that these leads will generally be one off in nature.

For business owners who are looking for trade in the consumer sector and find the prospect of dealing with Facebook just a little daunting, a little research may help them to find local consumer marketing websites where they can establish a presence.? The obvious advantage for any marketing company that finds such a niche is that they will be a big fish in a small pool instead of being one of many hundreds of thousands reaching out for a market which will probably be less than relevant to them because of the geographical distances involved.

When it comes to setting a marketing leads harvesting policy, companies should sit down and decide exactly what they?re looking for and how to go about it with the minimum costs and maximum effect.? Being able to identify where the best opportunities lie to harvest marketing leads will save a lot of time, money and effort.

For diabetics, a steady job is good for your health

ScienceDaily (Aug. 29, 2012) ? If you're diabetic or prone to diabetes, having a steady job appears to be good for your health, and not just because of the insurance coverage.

A new University of Michigan study found that that jobless working-age people with diabetes are less likely to adhere to their oral anti-diabetic medications than diabetics who are employed. Further, people of working age with diabetes are more likely to be unemployed than those who do not have diabetes.

The lack of a clear-cut, cause-and-effect relationship between insurance and medication adherence surprised lead researcher Rajesh Balkrishnan of the U-M College of Pharmacy and School of Public Health.

"Improved use of medications is more than just a facet of having medical insurance. It is linked to bigger issues such as being employed, periods of joblessness or a personal financial strain," said Balkrishnan, who believes that a healthier, active lifestyle and access to medical care resources through employers that want employees to remain productive play a big role in adherence.

Other factors that account for lack of medication adherence include lack of financial resources, stress due to unemployment and lack of access to health care.

Researchers looked at diabetes because it is one of the most commonly present chronic conditions in working-age adults in the United States, Balkrishnan said. And globally, diabetes is the seventh-leading cause of death and the eighth-most costly disease to treat. In 2007, total health care costs for diabetes were estimated at $174 billion.

Policy changes would help, Balkrishnan said.

"Workforce participation for adults with diabetes and other chronic conditions command the attention of public policymakers, particularly when prioritizing resource allocation," he said. "As a starting position, health care providers and systems need standard processes to identify individuals facing financial pressure and their vulnerability to lower medication adherence."

driving at work health and safety

Driving at work

Driving at work

Driving at work health and safety

Most of us can?t imagine our world without a car. Driving has become an essential part of modern life and everybody assumes that once you have passed the appropriate test and obtained a driving license that?s enough to drive and not to worry ever again about the re-training and the risks that driving at work health and safety involves. Re-training what???- would be the instant reaction of almost all of us. The truth is that driving is the most dangerous activity while at work it represents 35% of the annual deaths on UK roads. If we think about for a moment, if health and safety regulations as we know them now had existed when engines were invented, nobody would be even thinking about using a car. Because is too risky.

The cost for businesses when accidents occur is high, so there are some steps which companies could take in order to reduce the risks and costs and manage their driver?s behaviour while at work. collision related costs could be considerable. Although a possible vehicle repair is on average ?750, the real cost is up to 30 times that amount if you add the increased insurance costs, administrative time dealing with the accident, loss of productivity due to the employee absence, etc..

So having your employees driving at work health and safety is a serious issue for your business. Either you have your own company cars fleet and/ or ?grey fleet?- (employees are using their own vehicles for business) you need to make sure everybody have appropriate and legal driving license. Bear in mind that during these high-tech times we live in, there are more fake licenses in circulation than ever before. The usual forgetfulness to renew the address, the photograph or upgrade the surname will cost you money if accident happens, because such small looking things actually invalidate the document. Vehicle registration, marks and dates, insurance validity, road taxes, MOT records, who is the usual driver and where the car is based in all those are records you have to keep up to date to avoid problems with the authorities.

The minimum legal requirement which the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 contemplates is to carry out a ?suitable and sufficient risk assessment of every risk to employees?, obviously this includes driving for work purposes. There are different types of risk assessment in accordance with the industry and the activity, but there is no a standard one, so the advice of a health and safety advisor might be required. A well thought out assessment would categorize drivers into risk bands and the higher-risk group could be given the appropriate support and training in some cases. A lot of a good quality and cost-effective way of training would be through online modules. In vehicle practical training is expensive and may be many employees may be reluctant to do it. Groups work shops and seminars are another solution when training is needed. Another good way to reduce corporate culpability in case of accident and in the same time minimize the protests of the workforce ( many would think that company is labeling them as a ?bad drivers?), is to outsource the problem to companies which will provide all your employees with ?Permit to Drive?. Essentially, such businesses take care of checking the everybody?s driving licenses, vehicles, ensure you that every driver has taken a risk assessment and completed the necessary training to reduce risks, has had a regular eye check ups and has no other health issues that might compromise the safety.

If you have a road accident the authorities would look for a care related policies. Such policies would have to show the guidance given to the employee on what is expected while driving at work, including instruction whether it is acceptable to use mobile phones, a clear message explaining who is responsible for the day-to-day safety vehicle check ups, best practice on fatigue management, parking and speeding, procedures to follow in case of collision or breakdown, etc. Obviously you should be able to demonstrate (best if written and signed) that all drivers have been given access to the policies, have understood them and have agreed/accepted to follow those rules of behaviour. This is a comfortable way to limit the responsibility of the company in case of accident. The official bodies which could provide you with such policies are the British Vehicle Rental and Leasing Association or the Association of Car Fleet Operators.

Drive safe and enjoy. ?.

India raises social media sites misuse with Pakistan

Bombay News.Net Sunday 19th August, 2012

Union Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde Sunday raised the issue of misuse of social media sites by Pakistan-based elements in whipping up communal sentiments with his Pakistani counterpart Rehman Malik and sought his cooperation in checking and neutralising such forces.

According to home ministry officials, Shinde told Malik, who called him up, that elements based in Pakistan used such sites to circulate false pictures and stories so as to whip up communal sentiments in India.

Thousands of students from northeast fled the southern Indian cities of Bangalore and Chennai after hate messages were spread through mobile phones and on Facebook in the past two days promising retaliation for the ethnic violence in the northeastern state of Assam last month.

This was the first direct contact between the two ministers after Shinde took office.

Malik spoke about the pending issues and re-iterated his commitment to bring the masterminds and perpetrators of the Mumbai terror attack to justice.

He assured full mutual cooperation in this matter, said the officials.

Malik also invited Shinde to visit Pakistan to sign the revised visa agreement which has been agreed to by both the countries.

The two ministers also agreed to continue with mutual cooperation and work towards rooting out terrorism, said the officials.

Shinde conveyed his wishes for Eid to Malik and the people of Pakistan, expressing hope that the occasion would herald an improvement in relations between the two neighbours.

How to Draft a Residential Rent-to-Own Lease & Purchase Agreement

A Tenant | Rent-to-Own Agreements

Drafting a?rent-to-own lease and purchase agreement for residential real estate can be tricky for new real estate attorneys. Here is one way to do it.

Before you start, consider that there are three separate transactions occurring and draft the documents for each transaction separately before you attempting to combine them.

Lease

First, start with the Lease.? Assume the deal will go no further and draft the lease as your client would want a stand-alone lease.

Option to Purchase

Second, draft an Option to Purchase.? Again, assume this is a stand-alone document. Think about what your client would want in it. ?For example, should there be an option fee? Is rent credited towards the purchase price? Does the option last beyond the lease or does the option terminate early if the lease is terminated?

Purchase Agreement

Third, draft the Purchase Agreement.?Again, assume this is a stand-alone document.?Think about what your client would want in it.??Make the closing date ?thirty days from date Buyer exercises his Option to Purchase.?

Connect the Documents

Next, add a paragraph to the end of the lease saying ?Landlord grants Tenant an Option to Purchase on the terms of Exhibit A attached hereto.?

Next, add?a paragraph to the end of the option saying ?This Option shall expire at 4:30 p.m. on [date] unless Buyer delivers to Seller all of the following before that time: one fully executed copy of the Purchase Agreement attached as Exhibit A and $____ earnest money.?

Finally, ask?your client to execute two copies of all documents.? The Buyer should execute two copies of the Lease and Option but not the Purchase Agreement.? Give one set of originals to both sides.

Completed?Rent-to-Own Lease and Purchase Agreement

You now have a self-executing?rent-to-own lease and purchase agreement for residential real estate. Pat yourself on the back. Your job is done.

Tax Considerations

As you consider this type of transaction, be sure to think through the tax consequences of each of the payments and the reporting consequences if there are tax benefits, such as a renter?s credit. Also note that?rent payments are generally taxable (income tax) to the recipient.

Olympic mascots made in Chinese ?sweatshop? factories ??????? ????????

Staff making Wenlock and Mandeville toys say they were paid as little as six pounds a day and forced to work illegal overtime hours.

Activists in China spoke to dozens of factory workers and discovered staff were forced to work up to 120 hours overtime a month, nearly three times the legal limit. At one factory, staff had to buy their own safety masks and were fined half a day?s salary if they were five minutes late to work.

The report has been issued by Students and Scholars Against Corporate Misbehaviour (SACOM), a Hong Kong workers? rights group. SACOM also says staff were exposed to hazardous conditions in the paint spraying department. Some of the 50 workers interviewed said they left the factory constantly covered in paint and even their saliva had changed color.

During the busiest period of production for the Olympics, staff worked six day weeks for 11 to 12 hours a day, clocking up 120 hours a month in overtime ? despite Chinese labor laws stating overtime should be no longer than 36 hours a month.

Ghana's Beekeepers: James Moxon

James Moxon (1920-1999) bore the unparalleled distinction of being the only white man to be enstooled as a village chief in Ghana. As Nana Kofi Obonyaa, Ankobea of Aburi, Chief of Aburi, he held traditional sway over part of the Akuapem tribe that inhabited the cool hilltops north of the capital, Accra. When the Technology Consultancy Centre (TCC) of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) invited all interested people to attend the First National Workshop on Beekeeping in Kumasi in January 1981, James Moxon saw an opportunity to initiate a productive enterprise that would provide nourishment for the children and employment and income for adults under his care.

The Akuapem tribe was distinguished in several ways. They were the first tribe to have their language written down by European missionaries in the nineteenth century. As a result of the early publication of vernacular Bibles, the Akuapem dialect became regarded as the most literary form of the Akan language, a role for which it was well suited by its polite mode of expression. Then it was a son of Akuapem, Tetteh Quarshie, who is reputed to have brought cocoa to Ghana from the island of Fernando Po, where he had been employed on a cocoa plantation by the Portuguese. When cocoa farms spread rapidly across southern Gold Coast in the first few decades of the twentieth century, it was Akuapem entrepreneur farmers who spearheaded the movement and accumulated a large part of the new-found wealth.

Aburi, with its benign climate, was chosen by the British colonial administration as the location of the National Botanical Gardens which in the early 1970s was still a well-tended tourist attraction with a fully functioning guest house. It was to this green and pleasant land with its relatively affluent community that James Moxon had been invited to be chief on the eve of Ghana?s independence in 1957. It is likely that he was expected to continue to benefit the people in the way he had already done in the role of a popular District Commissioner in the British colonial administration.

Janes Moxon was the chief of a community of entrepreneurial people and he was himself an entrepreneur of distinction, having established businesses in Accra that included a bookshop, a publishing house and a restaurant. In attending the First National Workshop on Beekeeping he saw an opportunity to establish yet another enterprise to benefit his people. In spite of sustaining a few beestings, as did everyone who attended that seminal event, within a few years James Moxon?s Akuapem Honey had become an established local brand in Ghana, helped no doubt by the proximity of his apiaries to Ghana?s largest city, Accra.

James Moxon was famous in many ways, as a distinguished author, international negotiator and entrepreneur. He achieved the distinction of having a film made of his exploits as a beekeeper in Ghana and in England. The TCC was honoured by his attendance at the First National Workshop on Beekeeping and gratified by all he did to promote beekeeping thereafter. Not only in Aburi, but throughout the widespread community of beekeepers in Ghana, his memory is honoured as a chief and pioneer.

Salesforce.com: We Have 150K Chatter Groups ... - Business Insider

Salesforce.com just revamped its two-year-old chat tool, Chatter, to give users what they really want?the ability to talk to people outside of the company.

The tool has been wildly successful for Salesforce, Doug Bewsher, senior vice president of Chatter marketing, told Business Insider. Bewsher left Microsoft's Skype division this summer to join Salesforce.com.

Chatter now has 150,000 "active networks," Bewsher said, which means paying users of the tool, not just those in trials.

The new feature will make it even more popular. It's a tool called Salesforce Communities. It lets users open up their Chatter stream to anyone outside the company.

But it's not just about chat. The tool also integrates actual business processes into the Chatter stream.?So, for instance, a company can invite their retail partners into a network. While the sales rep is chatting with a retailer answering questions, the rep can place an order, or credit an account from within the tool.

Salesforce Communities is only launching its limited pilot today and won't be generally available until 2013. But it is announcing a big alpha user: GE Capital. Salesforce Communities is at the heart of GE's new community tool, and 50 other custom communities.

One thing the tool doesn't do, at least yet, is connect back to public social-media campaigns. Salesforce.com just acquired Buddy Media for?$689 million in June for that kind of technology. We'll see if the final Communities tool next year does this, but seems like an obvious fit.

As Bewsher well knows, this is what Microsoft will be chasing when it eventually integrates Yammer into its products like SharePoint, Office and, maybe, Microsoft Dynamics. Dynamics is Microsoft's CRM app that competes with Salesforce. Meanwhile, Salesforce.com is miles ahead.

Attitudes on the DPT on ADVANCE for Physical Therapy & Rehab ...

For the past three years, I have been conducting a study consisting of field interviews of physical therapists concerning their attitudes toward the doctor of physical therapy (DPT) degree. I have been assisted in this project by physical therapy students from the University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio, Husson University in Bangor, ME, and Rocky Mountain University of Health Sciences in Provo, UT.

This article summarizes the results of the surveys of Texas-based physical therapists from March to May, 2011.

Background of the Project

In 2000, the APTA House of Delegates established Vision 2020, under which, by the year 2020, "physical therapy will be provided by PTs who are doctors of physical therapy, recognized by consumers and other health care professionals as the providers of choice to whom consumers have direct access for the diagnosis, intervention and prevention of, impairments, activity limitations, participation restrictions, and environmental barriers related to movement, function and health."

In 2009, the APTA declared 6 operational goals to be achieved as part of Vision 2020, including: (1) autonomous practice, (2) direct access, (3) entry-level and post-professional preparation of doctors of physical therapy, (4) evidence-based practice expertise, (5) PTs as practitioners of choice for movement dysfunction, and (6) high levels of professionalism by physical therapy practitioners.

Currently, 48 states are recognized by the APTA as direct access states, with or without practice restrictions.

The Study

For this part of the study, 10 interview questions were asked of respondents:?

????1. How long have you been a PT??

????2. Are you aware of the APTA Vision 2020, and the new standards of a doctoral degree? What does it mean to you??

????3. What is your impression of new DPT graduates??

????4. What do you see as differences, if any, between BS, MPT and DPT-educated PTs??

????5. Would you be more likely to seek or hire a DPT vs. a non-DPT professional? Why or why not??

????6. How would you bridge the gap between work experience and formal education??

????7. What is your experience with, and application of, evidence-based practice??

????8. What is your stance on direct access??
???
????9. Where do you envision the physical therapy profession in 10 years??

????10. Is there anything I forgot to ask, or anything else you would like to add?

Five Texas-based PTs from widely variegated practice settings with an average of 15 years of clinical experience were interviewed for this segment of the study. The apparent softening of opposition to the DPT degree evident in prior interviews of PTs from across the United States is noteworthy.

The Results

Four of five interviewees (80%) are aware of Vision 2020. However, their interpretations of the policy differ. Two respondents view Vision 2020 as a means to incorporate more research into physical therapy practice, while the other two respondents envision Vision 2020 as a means to equalize the status of PTs with other primary health care professions, including medical doctors and doctors of chiropractic.

All five respondents (100%) view the DPT positively. The four with the most practice experience consider DPT graduates to be on par or slightly ahead of MPT graduates in their knowledge base, but perceive no differences in the two groups' hands-on clinical skill sets. One respondent believes that DPT graduates are better prepared academically and warrant expanded clinical privileges.

All five (100%) of respondents report that DPT graduates are better prepared to interpret and apply research to practice than MPT graduates, and respondents unanimously opine that MPT and DPT-educated PTs possess superior skill sets and clinical currency compared to baccalaureate-level PTs.

Four respondents (80%) would preferentially hire a DPT graduate over an MPT or baccalaureate-degreed PT. An additional justification for this response is the opinion that DPT graduates more readily embrace and utilize evidence-based practice strategies. The fifth respondent believes that the factors espoused by Farmer -- character, interpersonal skills and team-orientation -- are more important than a PT's degree level.

All five (100%) respondents are highly critical of the current physical therapy education model in terms of amount of time spent by MPT and DPT students in the clinic. One stated, "Being 'book-smart' is not enough!" All believe that 8- to 10-week clinical rotations provide inadequate clinical experience, and that physical therapy education should expeditiously transition to the 50-50 classroom-clinical experience-model utilized by medical schools across the United States.

Two of five respondents (40%) advocate greater emphasis on residencies and fellowships for DPT graduates.

Regarding evidence-based practice, four of five consider it critical for their practice success. All five respondents view direct access PT practice positively, although three of five believe that new graduates may be unprepared to assume an independent primary care role, and that seasoned clinicians may require additional education in differential diagnosis and related topics in order to practice autonomously.

All five respondents express strong optimism regarding the future of autonomous physical therapy practice over the next 10 years. One believes that, in 10 years, patients hopefully will say "I need to see my physical therapist" instead of "I need to see my medical doctor" for non-emergent musculoskeletal conditions.

An invitation to express additional thoughts yielded three observations from respondents. One believes that the DPT degree adds "significant respect for the profession as a whole." Another wants a more expedited transition to the DPT degree for seasoned clinicians. A third respondent is thankful for the opportunity to serve physical therapy education as an adjunct instructor.

Paradigm Shift

The results of this set of interviews evidences a shift in opinion about the DPT degree from mostly negative to strongly positive. More data is being collected and will be disseminated over the next two years regarding additional input concerning this fundamental paradigm shift in our profession. The complete study results are expected to be published in May 2014.

Michael Auer, Cindy Boyer, Brooke Cody, Steve Elliot, Germaine Herman, Rumali Kulkarni, Teddy Ortiz and Joshua Trock were UTHSCSA-based student PT-research assistants for this segment of the ongoing study, expected to conclude in December 2013. I thank them, along with many other student colleagues from UTHSCSA, Husson University, and Rocky Mountain University of Health Sciences for their dedicated work in support of this study.

Mysterious Louisiana sinkhole raises concerns of explosions and radiation

A nearly 400-foot deep sinkhole in Louisiana has swallowed all of the trees in its area and enacted a mandatory evacuation order for about 150 residences for fear of potential radiation and explosions.

The 400-square-foot gaping hole is in Assumption Parish, La., about 50 miles south of Baton Rouge.

The sinkhole sits in the middle of a heavily wooded space where it has consumed all of the soaring cypress trees that had been there. Flyover photos show some of the treetops still visible through the mud.

Authorities enacted a mandatory evacuation for between 100 and150 homes in the area, but most people have chosen to stay, according to the Mayor's Office of Emergency Preparedness. If any of the dangers seem to become more imminent, the order will be escalated to a forced evacuation.

While officials are not certain what caused the massive sinkhole, they believe it may be have ben caused by a nearby salt cavern owned by the Texas Brine Company.

After being used for nearly 30 years, the cavern was plugged in 2011 and officials believe the integrity of the cavern may have somehow been compromised, leading to the sinkhole.

[Slideshow: Massive sinkholes wreak havoc around the world]

On Thursday, Louisiana's Department of Natural Resources required that Texas Brine drill a well to investigate the salt cavern as soon as possible, obtain samples from the cavern and provide daily reports on their findings. It could take up to 10 days to set up the drilling process, even with an expedited process.

"We have to arrange for the driller. We have to pick a location. We have to be very careful to not be in a point that's too close to the sinkhole because of the weight of the rig," Texas Brine Company spokesman Sonny Cranch told ABCNews.com today. "We don't want to aggravate the situation."

The sinkhole is on the outside edge of the salt dome where this particular brine well is located.

"There are some indications that it very well may have been connected, but there's just indications," Cranch said. "There's nothing concrete that has connected the sinkhole to the cavern."

There was bubbling in the water and the sinkhole is near areas where there has been exploration for oil and gas in the past, which would make the presence of low levels of naturally occurring radioactive material (NORM) possible.

The state's Department of Environmental Quality said water samples from the sinkhole showed oil and diesel on its surface, but initial readings did not detect radiation.

In the days after the sinkhole opened up on Aug. 3, nearby Highway 70 was closed down because officials discovered that the sinkhole caused a 36-inch natural gas pipeline to bend and feared the possibility of an explosion, according to ABC News' Baton Rouge affiliate WBRZ.

"That's why the mandatory evacuation is going to stay on, because there is a risk for explosion," John Boudreaux of from Assumption Parish Emergency Preparedness said at a meeting with residents on Tuesday, WBRZ reported.

"We are determined to do everything we can to find the answer," president of Texas Brine Mark Cartwright told the residents.

Some community members were visibly frustrated with the situation and lack of answers.

"You can give us a straight answer because that's all we want," one woman said at the meeting. "We want to know when we can come home and be safe. Because you all go home after a days work. You're safe, but we're not."

Gov. Bobby Jindal issued a declaration of emergency allowing the Governor's Office of Homeland Security to assist in the efforts if necessary.

"This is extremely serious and it's been going on for too long to still be at this point," Kim Torres, spokeswoman for the Office of Emergency Preparedness, told ABCNews.com today. "The people are very aware of how serious this is."

Automated Language Translation Software for the Enterprises ...

Internet and Technology | Computers and Technology | * Written by petricam | Monday, 13 August 2012 02:02 | Word Count: 523

As enterprises grow and expand, there is the need for effective translation services. This is because, for any enterprise to succeed, it needs the wholehearted support of the customers. Customers would engage in brand advocacy if and only if they are happy with their experiences of a particular brand or enterprise.

With more than 6500 languages spoken in the world, global enterprises have a tough job at hand to provide trusted, rapid translations to expand their businesses. A global enterprise deals with huge chunks of content every day. And it is their responsibility to make the content available to its multilingual audience comprising of customers and employees in a format that can be easily read and understood.

Moreover, enterprises need to deal with colloquialism, idioms, slang, and jargon as what is acceptable in one language might not be acceptable in another language. For instance, take the case of certain product names that have to be marketed differently because of the lexical differences among languages. Calpis, a popular drink in Japan is marketed in North America, as Calpico as the word Calpis sounds a lot like ?cow piss?. In the same way, Irish Mist is not marketed in Germany because in German language, it means excrement. Since Mexicans are unable to pronounce the RC consonant cluster, RC Cola is called as ARCI Cola in Mexico.

For any enterprise, translation services are of paramount importance, as successful translation of content helps them in global expansion. With cost and speed being two of the primary concerns of enterprise translation projects, enterprises need automated language translation software that provides bilingual speakers with contextual translations of words and phrases rather than simpler, sentence-based translation systems. This lowers the cost of localization by as much as 50% while doubling the speed of translation. The translation software provides

* Terminology management functionality which maintains messaging consistency and accuracy

* Machine translation that can be used as a springboard for human polishing

* Translation memory which facilitates content recycling through successive projects

* The project management dashboard and real-time reporting that simplify team coordination

Hence, those enterprises looking to expand their market globally must invest in language translation software.

What Changes Necessitate an Estate Plan Review | Bailey Law ...

In a recent article on Forbes.com, the author lists a number of events that should trigger a review of an individual or family?s estate plan.? The items listed by the author are as follows:? Getting married, divorce or death of a spouse, purchasing or refinancing a home, new accounts, or children changes.? While I agree that these items would require a review of an estate plan, it may be more complex than the author suggests.

On the issue of death or divorce of? a spouse, he simply states that a change in marriage status could necessitate a changes to the estate plan.? However, in the case of an husband and wife with a living trust (revocable trust), upon the dissolution of the marriage the trust is revoked.? Further, most Powers of Attorney (form healthcare or financial decisions) are revoked when the spouses divorce automatically.? It is more than just a review of the estate plan ? for all intents and purposes the estate plan has been gutted by the operation of law and the change in marital status.? When a spouse dies with a living trust, some changes cannot be made ? they become irrevocable.? Therefore, the surviving spouse would have to make changes as far trustees, POA?s etc, however some items are set in stone per the trust document.? Therefore, it is far too simplistic to say that upon the death of spouse that a person should review their estate plan ? a portion of the estate plan has taken effect.? That requires that couples with a revocable trust, must constantly think about changes to beneficiaries, and other provisions because once of the settlors dies, certain aspects cannot be changed.

Was James Joyce the Greatest Mind-Scientist Ever?

I bought a Kindle recently, and excitedly downloaded free stuff: Stevenson?s Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (not as good as I remembered), stories of H.P. Lovecraft (like a parody of Poe, but good for bedtime) and, finally, James Joyce?s Ulysses, released in full (a journal published chunks beginning in 1918) in 1922. I trekked through Ulysses in college 30 years ago under professorial guidance and wanted to revisit it to see how it holds up.

It holds up just fine. In fact, I?m digging Ulysses so much that I must foist an appreciation of it on you. Joyce did something that still feels fresh and revolutionary, although it has inspired countless imitations. He put us inside the head of another human, in a way no one had done before. We eavesdrop on someone?s thoughts as though they are being telepathically transmitted into our brain. Joyce was not a theorist of mind but he was an exceptional observer of it, far more so than any scientist. He helped us become more aware of our awareness.

I?ve written about the problem of solipsism, how each of us is trapped in a hermetically sealed chamber of his or her own subjective awareness. Joyce knocks a hole in the prison of our selves so that we can peer into the mind of another person. We can never really know what it is like to be a bat or cat, but thanks to Joyce we have a better idea what it is like to be a human being.

Joyce had scientific precursors. William James, in the late 19th century, drew attention to the weird nature of consciousness. It is not a train?a collection of objects moving through space?but a stream, James said. And thoughts are not like atoms or protons, uniform and durable; they are evanescent, ever-changing, slip-sliding into each other. Another precursor of Joyce was Freud, who held that deep down we are nasty, horny creatures, much more so we realize or care to admit.

James and Freud merely told us these things about ourselves. Joyce showed us, dramatizing the scientists? hypotheses about the nature of mind. Joyce?s novel has the vivid immediacy of a first-person video game, with extra screens for memory and fantasy. Joyce immerses us in the streaming thoughts of his characters, thoughts that swirl, cascade, eddy, ebb, rush onward, colliding with and swerving around the hard facts?the sights, sounds, smells, tastes, people and places?of Dublin on June 16, 1904.

Joyce?s characters?Stephen Dedalus, a young, intellectually pretentious teacher and would-be writer (modeled after Joyce himself); Leopold Bloom, a Jewish ad salesman, father and husband; Molly Bloom, his cheating, songstress spouse?are in many respects exotic, idiosyncratic, especially to an American reading in the 21st century. And yet these fictional humans feel real and universal.

Joyce reveals?revels in?the animality of his characters. Bloom pisses, poops, gobbles, swills, haggles, preens, cringes, lusts, jerks off. Joyce was a taboo-buster not for its own sake but in the service of truth, of reportorial accuracy. Unlike gloomy, judgmental Freud, however, Joyce was fond of his fellow humans, in spite of all our flaws. Bloom, my favorite character, is timid, scheming, lecherous, gluttonous, but also noble, brave, generous, loving, dignified. He?s tragic and comic, brooding one moment about the suicide of his father and the death of his baby son and the next hungering for a piece of cheese or ogling a babe on the street.

Joyce reminds me of comedian Louie C.K., whose jokes about masturbation and farts segue into riffs on death, heartbreak and loneliness, and whose overall philosophy seems to be: Life sucks sometimes, but it can be pretty great, too, and so funny! Real wisdom should put a smile on your face.

Joyce achieved a kind of hyper-realism, rendering the experience of ordinary awareness so faithfully that other depictions seem quaintly artificial, like medieval paintings before artists mastered perspective. Ulysses accomplishes this feat while constantly reminding you of?even rubbing your face in?its artificiality, its existence as an elaborate literary composition, like Hamlet or the Odyssey (which provided Joyce with a template for his work).

As Joyce would be the first to admit, the mirror that he holds up to nature is distorted, blurred, cracked, as all representations?whether scientific or literary, fictional or factual?must be. Joyce?s mirror is made of words, and some intuitions, intentions, desires, anxieties flit through the gaps between words. They are inexpressible, or ineffable, to use James?s term.

Also, Ulysses ain?t everyone?s cup o? tea. Virginia Woolf, another modernist master, was unimpressed, once complaining, ?I don?t know that [Joyce has] got anything very interesting to say, and after all the pissing of a dog isn?t very different from the pissing of a man.? Some feminists view Molly?s sexy soliloquy, which concludes Ulysses?and which I consider to be a masterpiece within a masterpiece?as an all-too-male fantasy of a female mind.

But to my mind, Joyce exemplifies Noam Chomsky?s dictum that we will always learn more about ourselves from literature than from science. In the 90 years since Ulysses was published, scientists have not progressed much toward a theory of consciousness. Hence the persistence of creaky old paradigms like psychoanalysis and even behaviorism, which assumes, absurdly, that mind doesn?t matter. Although Joyce didn?t offer a theory of consciousness, he gave us a better sense of what consciousness is, and for that we should be grateful.

Postscript: Joyce has been in the news lately. Louis Menand just wrote a fine piece on Joyce in The New Yorker, as did Michael Chabon in The New York Review of Books. And mega-bestselling author Paul Coelho recently suggested that he is a better writer than Joyce, provoking a British blogger to call Coelho?s work ?a nauseous broth of egomania and snake-oil mysticism with slightly less intellect, empathy and verbal dexterity than the week-old camembert I threw out yesterday.?

Standard Chartered begins fightback on Iran allegations

WASHINGTON/LONDON (Reuters) - Cowboy local regulator or the exposer of lax federal bureaucrats?

That's the key question being asked about New York banking regulator Benjamin Lawsky after his explosive charge that London's Standard Chartered bank abetted $250 billion of money-laundering transactions with Iran.

Standard Chartered won help Wednesday from Britain's central bank governor, who portrayed Lawsky as marching to his own tune, and marching out of step with federal regulators in Washington. "One regulator, but not the others, has gone public while the investigation is still going on," the Bank of England's Mervyn King said at a news conference in London.

Meanwhile, the U.S. Treasury Department, in a letter responding to a request for clarification from British authorities, said it takes sanctions violations seriously.

The British bank lost over a quarter of its market value in 24 hours after Lawsky, the head of New York State's Department of Financial Services, threatened Monday to cancel Standard Chartered's state banking license, which is critical for dealing in dollars. Lawsky called Standard Chartered a "rogue institution" for breaking U.S. sanctions against Iran.

Standard Chartered shares bounced 7.1 percent on Wednesday to close in London at 13.15 pounds, up from a three-year low of 10.92 hit on Tuesday. They were still down 18 percent since the regulator's threat, which Chief Executive Peters Sands said was "disproportionate" and came as a "complete surprise."

The bank's top executives, some like Sands scrambling back from summer vacations, worked on a defense strategy. So far, the executives have contested the regulator's figures and his interpretation of the law, but they have given little further detail. The bank says only a tiny proportion of its Iran-related deals - less than $14 million - was questionable under U.S. sanctions rules.

Sources told Reuters that federal banking regulators in Washington, who had been probing Standard Chartered's Iran-related deals for more than two years, were surprised by the timing of Lawsky's charges and the stridency of his language.

Lawsky's Department of Financial Services had come to the conclusion the case was getting old and that it wanted to move forward, a person with knowledge of the situation said. The department told other agencies at a meeting in April that it planned to move forward with the case, the person said.

Members of Lawsky's office met representatives of Standard Chartered around May but did not inform the bank it planned to issue an order against it, the person said.

"This is a case about Iran, money laundering, and national security," Lawsky said in a statement on Wednesday. "We will continue to work closely with our law enforcement partners, both federal and state, in this effort. No bank, big or small, foreign or domestic, is above the law."

In Washington, Adam Szubin, director of the Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control, said in a letter to British authorities that his office is investigating Standard Chartered for "potential Iran-related violations as well as a broader set of potential sanctions violations."

The letter, which was dated Wednesday and obtained by Reuters, came in response to a British request for clarification of U.S. sanctions laws. Although much of the letter focused on so-called U-turn transactions, which are at the center of New York's allegations, the letter said it was not a comment on Lawsky's action.

The alleged U-turn transactions refer to money moved for Iranian clients among banks in the United Kingdom and Middle East and cleared through Standard Chartered's New York branch, but which neither started nor ended in Iran.

In London, King drew unfavorable comparisons between the handling of this case and other U.S. actions against British banks, such as the investigation of interest rate manipulation at Barclays PLC.

In the Barclays case, he said, all regulators in Britain and the United States produced coordinated reports after the investigation was complete.

"I think all the UK authorities would ask is that the various regulatory bodies that are investigating the particular case try to work together and refrain from making too many public statements until the investigation is completed," King said.

Standard Chartered's Sands, in his first public comments since the crisis arose, offered no major new information on the allegations, which the bank has been reviewing with authorities for the past two years.

"(We) fundamentally reject the overall picture and believe there are no grounds for them to take this action," he told reporters. The threat to cancel the bank's license to operate in New York would be "wholly disproportionate," he said.

Although Standard Chartered's business is concentrated in emerging markets, which has helped insulate it from the global financial crisis, it needs to be able to operate in New York so it can offer dealings around the world in U.S. dollars.

Also on Wednesday, Deloitte LLP, which was accused in Lawsky's order of wrongdoing in its role as an outside consultant to Standard Chartered, denied any misconduct. Deloitte was hired by Standard Chartered after U.S. authorities reprimanded the bank for similar lapses on transactions in 2004.

"Deloitte had no knowledge of any alleged misconduct by any Standard Chartered Bank employees and categorically denies that it aided in any way any violation of law by the bank," the firm said in a statement.

Specifically, Deloitte said it "absolutely did not delete" references to transactions from a report, contrary to an allegation in Lawsky's order.

CURSING THE AMERICANS

On Monday, Lawsky had reproduced what he said were quotes from an unidentified Standard Chartered executive director in a conversation in 2006 that demonstrated the bank's "obvious contempt" for U.S. banking regulations.

"You f---ing Americans. Who are you to tell us, the rest of the world, that we're not going to deal with Iranians?" the quote was rendered in documents released by the regulators.

People familiar with the situation said the bank's group finance director, Richard Meddings, one of five executive directors at the time, was the unnamed man.

Ray Ferguson, a bank executive who attended that meeting, told Reuters that while Meddings had used the expletive in a heated exchange, he did not, to his recollection, say the second part of the quote attributed to him about U.S. sanctions.

Meddings did not respond to repeated requests for comment.

Asked for the bank's view on the quote, Sands said: "We don't believe it's accurate." He defended the ethics of the bank, which he has run for six years: "I don't think there is anything wrong with the culture at Standard Chartered,"

Calling the allegations "very damaging", he said he would address "mistakes" that had been "clearly wrong", but said: "There were no systematic attempts to circumvent sanctions."

The BoE's King said he did not share the view held by some that the move in New York was part of a concerted U.S. effort to undermine London as a financial center, following the Barclays probe and a U.S. Senate panel report that criticized HSBC Holding's efforts to police suspect transactions.

One British lawmaker, however, said the affair was part of a "political onslaught" in the United States against British banks.

"I think it's a concerted effort that's been organized at the top of the U.S. government. I think this is Washington trying to win a commercial battle to have trading from London shifted to New York," said John Mann, a member of parliament's finance committee, who also called for a parliamentary inquiry.
