PITTSBURGH - A.J. Green doesn't really care about the Cincinnati Bengals' woeful past. The wide receiver wasn't part of it and hasn't really taken the time to study it.

The Bengals were bad. End of story.

And now they're good. Beginning of story.

Andy Dalton hit Green for a 21-yard pass in the final minutes to set up Josh Brown's 43-yard field goal with 4 seconds left to lift the Bengals to a 13-10 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday. Cincinnati (9-6) clinched a second straight playoff berth after beating the Steelers (7-8) for the first time since 2009. Pittsburgh (7-8) was eliminated from postseason contention.

The only other time the Bengals made the playoffs in consecutive seasons came in 1981-82, six years before Green was born.

"This has been our goal coming in at the beginning of the season," Green said. "A lot of people talked about we hadn't been in in back to back seasons in 30 years. I don't worry about that stuff. I've been here two years and we made the playoffs all two years. That's all we can control."

Shredding the label as erratic - and sometimes comical - losers one improbable victory at a time, the Bengals, their precocious duo of Green and Dalton and their quickly improving defense have Cincinnati in uncharted territory.

The Bengals have been around since 1968. This is the first time they'll make the postseason in two straight non-strike years.

"I know they just think that there's some complex; there's no complex, you've just got to come play and win," coach Marvin Lewis said. "This group in there has very little history of anything."

Maybe that's why Bengals aren't doomed to repeat it.

Brown missed a 56-yarder earlier in the fourth quarter, but earned a second chance when Reggie Nelson picked off Ben Roethlisberger and returned it to the Pittsburgh 46 with 14 seconds remaining. Dalton found Green down the right sideline on the next play, setting up Brown's winner.

"I've had some pretty big kicks, but that was a long time ago," said Brown, who is filling in for injured starter Mike Nugent. "When you have a chance for the playoffs there's nothing bigger. It's a big deal.

Dalton completed 24 of 41 for 278 yards and two interceptions for the Bengals, which snapped a five-game losing streak to Pittsburgh. Green caught 10 passes for 116 yards and Cincinnati's defense next let the Steelers get comfortable.

Roethlisberger completed 14 of 28 passes for 220 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions. Leon Hall returned the first pick 17 yards for a touchdown in the first quarter and Nelson stepped in front of an overthrown Roethlisberger pass in the fourth.

The Steelers needed to win their final two games to make the playoffs. Instead, the team that was 6-3 in early November will spend January at home after falling for the fifth time in its last six games.

""We should be (in the playoffs) if it wasn't for me," Roethlisberger said after throwing his second game-deciding interception in eight days.

Roethlisberger tossed a pick - also intended for Wallace - on the second play of overtime in Dallas last Sunday, allowing the Cowboys to win it on a field goal. He openly questioned offensive coordinator Todd Haley's play calling after the loss, but apologized later and insisted he and Haley were "on the same page."

Maybe, but the Steelers hardly played like it. The Bengals sacked Roethlisberger four times and allowed Pittsburgh to complete just 2 of 14 third downs.

"Not our day and thus, not our year," Pittsburgh coach Mike Tomlin said. "Just not enough significant plays at the moments. Sounds like a broken record but reality as we sit here."

Pittsburgh did a decent job of keeping Dalton and Green in check, posting season highs with three turnovers and six sacks. The Bengals couldn't run the ball at all, managing just 14 yards against the NFL's top defense. Still, it wasn't enough for the Steelers, turning a season that looked so promising before Election Day into a muddled mess.

Instead of making playoff plans, Pittsburgh needs a victory next week against Cleveland to avoid the first losing season in Tomlin's six-year tenure.

Normally it's the Bengals who are playing out the string. Yet the franchise that served as a punchline for so long is now the one throwing the punches. Cincinnati never trailed in a place it rarely wins and allowed the Steelers to make the critical mistakes.

Well, most of them anyway.

Cincinnati drove into Pittsburgh territory midway through the fourth quarter with the score tied at 10 before things bogged down at the Steelers 38. Rather than try to pin reeling Pittsburgh deep, Lewis sent out Brown to attempt a 56-yard field goal into the tricky Heinz Field winds.

The kick was never close, giving the Steelers premium field position with 3:18 left.

"I make decisions to try to win the game today and they kind of backfired on me a little bit," Lewis said.

Pittsburgh, however, had its own kicking issues. The Steelers moved to the Cincinnati 36, then brought out Shaun Suisham for a 53-yard attempt that was short all the way.

The Bengals went nowhere, giving Pittsburgh one last shot in regulation. Rather than run out the clock and play for overtime with the ball at their own 11 and 44 seconds to go, the Steelers tried to make something happen.

And they did. For the Bengals. Facing second down at the Pittsburgh 29, Roethlisberger rolled to his right and tried to hit Wallace down the sideline. The ball sailed over Wallace's head and into Nelson's arms.

Two plays later Cincinnati was celebrating a playoff berth that signaled another step out of its mediocre past.

NOTES: Cincinnati's 14 yards rushing were the second-fewest in franchise history. The Bengals had 4 yards rushing against Baltimore in 2000 ... Pittsburgh TE Heath Miller left game in the fourth quarter with a right knee injury ... Brown is 8 of 9 since taking over for Nugent three weeks ago ... Five of Pittsburgh's eight losses this season have come by three points ... Steelers RB Rashard Mendenhall had 50 yards rushing in his return after serving a one-game suspension for conduct detrimental to the team.

Chinese medicine yields secrets: Atomic mechanism of two-headed molecule derived from Chang Shan, a traditional chinese herb

Dec. 23, 2012 ? The mysterious inner workings of Chang Shan -- a Chinese herbal medicine used for thousands of years to treat fevers associated with malaria -- have been uncovered thanks to a high-resolution structure solved at The Scripps Research Institute (TSRI).

Described in the journal Nature this week, the structure shows in atomic detail how a two-headed compound derived from the active ingredient in Chang Shan works. Scientists have known that this compound, called halofuginone (a derivative of the febrifugine), can suppress parts of the immune system -- but nobody knew exactly how.

The new structure shows that, like a wrench in the works, halofuginone jams the gears of a molecular machine that carries out "aminoacylation," a crucial biological process that allows organisms to synthesize the proteins they need to live. Chang Shan, also known as Dichroa febrifuga Lour, probably helps with malarial fevers because traces of a halofuginone-like chemical in the herb interfere with this same process in malaria parasites, killing them in an infected person's bloodstream.

"Our new results solved a mystery that has puzzled people about the mechanism of action of a medicine that has been used to treat fever from a malaria infection going back probably 2,000 years or more," said Paul Schimmel, PhD, the Ernest and Jean Hahn Professor and Chair of Molecular Biology and Chemistry and member of The Skaggs Institute for Chemical Biology at TSRI. Schimmel led the research with TSRI postdoctoral fellow Huihao Zhou, PhD.

Halofuginone has been in clinical trials for cancer, but the high-resolution picture of the molecule suggests it has a modularity that would make it useful as a template to create new drugs for numerous other diseases.

The Process of Aminoacylation and its Importance to Life

Aminoacylation is a crucial step in the synthesis of proteins, the end products of gene expression. When genes are expressed, their DNA sequence is first read and transcribed into RNA, a similar molecule. The RNA is then translated into proteins, which are chemically very different from DNA and RNA but are composed of chains of amino acid molecules strung together in the order called for in the DNA.

Necessary for this translation process are a set of molecules known as transfer RNAs (tRNAs), which shuttle amino acids to the growing protein chain where they are added like pearls on a string. But before the tRNAs can move the pearls in place, they must first grab hold of them.

Aminoacylation is the biological process whereby the amino acid's pearls are attached to these tRNA shuttles. A class of enzymes known as aminoacyl-tRNA synthetases is responsible for attaching the amino acids to the tRNAs, and Schimmel and his colleagues have been examining the molecular details of this process for years. Their work has given scientists insight into everything from early evolution to possible targets for future drug development.

Over time what has emerged as the picture of this process basically involves three molecular players: a tRNA, an amino acid and the aminoacyl-tRNA synthetase enzyme that brings them together. A fourth molecule called ATP is a microscopic form of fuel that gets consumed in the process.

The new work shows that halofuginone gets its potency by interfering with the tRNA synthetase enzyme that attaches the amino acid proline to the appropriate tRNA. It does this by blocking the active site of the enzyme where both the tRNA and the amino acid come together, with each half of the halofuginone blocking one side or the other.

Interestingly, said Schimmel, ATP is also needed for the halofuginone to bind. Nothing like that has ever been seen in biochemistry before.

"This is a remarkable example where a substrate of an enzyme (ATP) captures an inhibitor of the same enzyme, so that you have an enzyme-substrate-inhibitor complex," said Schimmel.

The article, "ATP-Directed Capture of Bioactive Herbal-Based Medicine on Human tRNA Synthetase," by Huihao Zhou, Litao Sun, Xiang-Lei Yang and Paul Schimmel was published in the journal Nature on Dec. 23, 2012.

This work was supported by the National Institutes of Health through grants #GM15539, #23562 and #88278 and by a fellowship from the National Foundation for Cancer Research.

4 firefighters shot, 2 fatally, in western NY

WEBSTER, N.Y. (AP) ? Four volunteer firefighters responding to a pre-dawn house fire were shot Monday morning, two fatally, leading to a shootout in suburban Rochester, N.Y., police said.

"One or more shooters" fired at the firefighters after they arrived shortly after 5:30 a.m. at the blaze near the Lake Ontario shore, just east of Rochester, Town of Webster Police Chief Gerald Pickering said.

There was no active shooter at the scene later Monday morning, according to Monroe County Sheriff Patrick O'Flynn. The first Webster police officer who arrived on the scene exchanged gunfire with the shooter, Flynn said, but he had no other information on the shootout.

The West Webster Fire District received a report of a car and house on fire on Lake Road, on a narrow peninsula where Irondequoit Bay meets Lake Ontario, Flynn said.

"When they got there, they stated to take on rounds and the initial responders were struck," the sheriff said.

The fire started in one home and spread to two others and a car, officials said.

The two wounded firefighters were in critical condition at a Rochester hospital, Flynn said.

Webster, a middle-class, lakeside suburb, now is the scene of violence linked to house fires for two Decembers in a row.

Last Dec. 7, authorities say, a 15-year-old boy doused his home with gasoline and set it ablaze, killing his father and two brothers, 16 and 12. His mother and 13-year-old sister escaped with injuries. He is being prosecuted as an adult.

Bombing kills 4, wounds 11 in Iraq

BAGHDAD (AP) ? An explosion at a shop selling CDs killed 4 people in a town northeast of the Iraqi capital Baghdad on Saturday.

Police officials say a bomb hidden in a plastic bag exploded near the shop Saturday afternoon in the town of Qazaniyah. Eleven people were wounded in the attack, and the shop was completely destroyed. Qazaniyah is 180 kilometers (110 miles) northeast of Baghdad.

A medic in a nearby hospital confirmed the death toll. All the officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to brief reporters.

Violence has ebbed in Iraq, but insurgent attacks are still frequent.

The attack comes in the midst of growing political uncertainty.

Iraq's president Jalal Talabani, who was working to ease tensions between Iraq's Shiite Arab-led government and the Kurdish minority, suffered a stroke earlier this week and was flown to Germany for treatment. And on Thursday, Iraqi security forces arrested at least 10 guards assigned to the finance ministry, angering the Sunni minister and his political allies.

In the northern Kurdish region, Sunni parliament speaker, Osama al-Nujaifi met with the leader of the self-ruled Kurdish region, Massoud Barzani in order to discuss their response to the growing crisis.

In a statement after their meeting, both sides expressed their discontent with the arrests, calling on the central government to take into consideration the "delicate period Iraq is going through."

Does President Obama know what he wants?

T

he fiscal cliff. The jobless recovery. Comprehensive immigration reform. Climate change. Implementing ObamaCare. Cutting healthcare spending. Rebuilding our infrastructure. Addressing student debt. Fixing the tax code. Gun control. There is no shortage of domestic issues that this president might address. But to govern is to choose, and this president has limited political capital. He will have to choose carefully.

And yet, the nature of President Obama's campaign, coupled with a few odd choices relating to the selection of the president's second-term cabinet, raise questions relating to whether Obama has thought carefully about what he truly cares about, or whether he is instead playing a very complicated game of whack-a-mole, reacting to events as they pop up.

Let us begin with Chuck Hagel and Susan Rice. The president wanted to nominate Susan Rice to be secretary of state (she withdrew because of GOP opposition), and he seems prepared to nominate Chuck Hagel as secretary of defense (Hagel faces similar opposition). Of course, the president has the constitutional authority to nominate members of his cabinet as well as enough Democratic votes in the Senate to confirm virtually any nominee he can get past a potential filibuster. But that he can pick whoever he wants does not mean that he should, which is where Rice and Hagel raise questions.

Being the secretary of either state or defense is undoubtedly a powerful and important position. But in the grand scheme of things, getting the exact nominee a president wants is not vital. Why? Because cabinet members serve directly under the executive (i.e. they answer to the president), and their decisions will mirror the president's wishes. This contrasts quite radically from judicial nominees ? especially Supreme Court appointees ? who, if confirmed, gain life tenure and play an incredibly important role in shaping the legal landscape while not answering to any political body. The bottom line is that a president with limited political capital has far less incentive to fight for a specific individual to serve in his cabinet than he might for a specific judge. So why is the president bothering with Rice and Hagel??It is utterly puzzling. Obama has limited political capital. Thinking strategically about his long-term political goals, why on Earth would he deliberately rankle GOP senators when he could select a similarly valuable candidate without fostering ill will on the right?

Might the Hagel/Rice sagas merely reflect poor political judgment? Perhaps. But one of the dirty little secrets of the 2012 presidential campaign is that Barack Obama provided almost no vision for his next four years in office ? his campaign focused almost entirely on destroying Mitt Romney's character. The result: We know almost nothing about what the president really intends to focus on. The fact that President Obama never took the time or effort to paint a clear picture of his vision for the next four years, coupled with the quixotic way he is handling seemingly uncomplicated nomination processes on the Hill, makes me wonder whether that vision even exists, or whether it is being cobbled together on the fly.

Either way, the conclusion is troubling. If the vision does exist, then the fact that he has been so aggressive in pushing potential nominees to which the GOP is overtly hostile suggests that the president failed to learn the most important political lesson of his first four years, which is that he can do very little without Republican support. If, on the other hand, the president is only now thinking about what he wants to do with his next four years, he had better come up with a vision quickly, because trying to navigate from event to event without any comprehensive vision is apt to create an incoherent jumble of policy decisions that result in no real legacy and, more importantly, no real progress in any one direction.

Affairs: A Russian Roulette Of Love

Once upon a time, our Love of things was less important than our Love for one another,?wanting to be married and have a family was normal.?The men, women, children and pets used to play their role. Now, we Love things more, our roles are so mixed up that the pets are our children and children are our friends.? What caused the shift? Can we?get back to the basics? Did I mention greed?? In our pursuit of the deluxe apartment in the sky have we forgotten that was?built on a foundation?? Its no wonder we are so unhappy in our relationships. People who are unhappy look for happiness in other people.? Most often in affairs.

All this mess with David Petraeus got me thinking, okay folks here it is?affairs of any kind break hearts and can leave people devastated.? Playing ?Russian Roulette? with Love is dangerous to say the least. Often times you can enter into a wrong situation believing you will be able to walk away, dismissing the power of human connection for just having fun. It is a fools paradise because often times we do not control when and with whom we will fall in love. Then things become a series of confusion, emotion and pain. The best way to stop and affair is to never start.

Love is not to be planned, plotted and controlled. It is to be cherished, respected, experienced and enjoyed. Love is a lot of things but it is NEVER unsure.

Job?s family Yacht supposedly impounded after payment dispute with designer Philippe Starck

Job?s family Yacht supposedly impounded after payment dispute with designer Philippe StarckVenus, the super Yacht that the late Steve Jobs was working on with French designer Philippe Stark has supposedly been impounded in a Dutch harbor because of a payment dispute between the Job?s family and Mr Starck.

Port of Amsterdam spokesman Jeroen Ranzijn confirmed the boat has been in the harbor since Dec. 8, and won't leave until the civil dispute is resolved ? possibly as early later Friday. "It was actually ready to continue its voyage when there was a dispute between two parties, including the heirs, and one party laid a claim on the boat," said Ranzijn. He said the dispute may be resolved shortly.

The supposed dispute is purely a financial one and is said to involve a lower than expected payment to Philippe Starck. His original fees were thought to be in the region of ?9 million ($11.8 million) but as the completed Yacht cost much less than originally thought, Starcks fees were supposedly reduced to ?6 million ($7.9 million).

The Yacht cost a total of ?105 million ($138 million) to complete so the dispute is really over small change and shouldn't take too long to resolve. The Yacht was finally completed this year and is unsurprisingly like an Apple Store taken float, with an aluminum exterior measuring 80 meters long that -- you guessed it -- makes it lighter than other yachts in its class. The design is minimalist, with teak decks and floor-to-ceiling glass, and 7 iMacs are front and center in the wheelhouse.

Buxton Online Is Completed and the Team Responsible for Rescuing the Peak District Website Which was Borrowed and Brought Safely Home, Now Toasts Its Relaunch

Http://http://www.buxtononline.net was once a very popular website once upon a time, but it was unfortunately turned offline earlier this year. The team at Peak District Online welcome home a website which was exported temporarily, but which now sits very happily within a peakapedia portfolio dedicated to the Peak District National Park. Buxton Online is live again as the team of researchers and writers complete their mammoth task of restoring it to its former glory.

Peak District, UK (PRWEB UK) 21 December 2012

Http://http://www.buxtononline.net has been rescued from the Far East by a team of intrepid Derbyshire explorers and brought home to be re-branded.

'We've recently acquired a website which we have admired for a number of years and we can't wait to boast about it,' explains James Dobson, director and wildlife photographer for the hugely popular Peakapedia website all about Derbyshire, Peak District Online. 'Our team of writers and researchers have been beavering away sourcing all the latest up-to-date information about modern day Buxton to fill the site with content, but also going back years to find archived history, facts and figures creating a really compact source of information for anyone interested about this area.'

Thanks to some secret service negotiations which would seriously impress her Majesty, the website which should never have left, is back to the UK with a vengeance. The brand-new revamped website boasting about Buxton goes live, complete, restored and brought back to life with its glorious accompanying photographs, but it wasn't an easy task explains Steve Wake, fellow director and landscape photographer for the website.

'We thought this was a real shame the old site went off-line because it was very resourceful for Buxton residents and visitors to the Peak District,' he said.' We have, for the last few months, been in negotiations with the new owner of the domain name to sell to us, so we could rebuild this great site and bring it back to Britain and more importantly, back to the Peak District.' He continues, 'The owner of the domain name is actually a businessman in Japan, so the team at Peak District Online felt very passionate that they should acquire the website and bring the Buxton website back home where it belongs.'

With over 50 pages now live, the team at Peak District online promise this isn't the end and will endeavour to keep updating the site as they delve into the history and add more pages keeping residents and visitors up-to-date with all the relevant news, events and information for anyone wishing to stay, or visit Buxton and the surrounding area.

Steve went on to explain,' it is still in its infancy really as there is so much to write about Buxton and our researchers and writers are having a lot of fun sourcing all the old, intermediate and brand new up-to-date information to keep the website current but we feel for the moment we have completed a real journey. It is now live and has some really good content and photographs already on it and it is our aim in the early part of next year to keep it growing steadily every week.'

Using their team who are all experts about the Peak District, Buxton Online is aimed at finding out about the town that has everything. With its stunning countryside, its mixture of tiny interesting streets, open spaces and alleyways which would give Harry Potter a good run around on his broomstick they say. It has a mix of hustle and bustle, but the serenity and space to take the time to sit and relax but also has a rich, surprising and entertaining history which is highlighted perfectly in their prose.

Just like Peak District Online, http://www.buxtononline.net will grow and grow with new information as it becomes available, so Steve and James would urge all to please give the site a visit and bookmark it for the future.

'Fiscal cliff' talks turn sour, Obama threatens veto

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Talks to avoid a U.S. fiscal crisis stalled on Wednesday as President Barack Obama accused opponents of holding a personal grudge against him while the top Republican negotiator called the president "irrational."

As a year-end deadline nears, Obama and House of Representatives Speaker John Boehner are locked in intense bargaining over a possible deal to avoid the so-called fiscal cliff of harsh tax hikes and automatic spending cuts that could badly damage an already weak economy.

Obama said he was puzzled over what was holding up the talks and told Boehner's Republicans to stop worrying about scoring "a point against the president" or forcing him into concessions "just for the heck of it."

"It is very hard for them to say yes to me," he told a news conference in the White House. "At some point, you know, they've got to take me out of it."

The rise in tensions threatens to unravel significant progress made over the last week.

Boehner and Obama have each offered substantial concessions that have made a deal look within reach. Obama has agreed to cuts in benefits for seniors, while Boehner has conceded to Obama's demand that taxes rise for the richest Americans.

However, the climate of goodwill has evaporated since Republicans announced plans on Tuesday to put an alternative tax plan to a vote in the House this week that would largely disregard the progress made so far in negotiations.

On Wednesday, Obama threatened to veto the Republican measure, known as "Plan B," if Congress approved it.

Boehner's office slammed Obama for opposing their plan, which would raise taxes on households making more than $1 million a year and is a concession from longstanding Republican opposition to increasing any tax rates.

"The White House's opposition to a backup plan ... is growing more bizarre and irrational by the day," Boehner said through his spokesman, Brendan Buck.

Boehner expressed confidence the House would pass the legislation on Thursday. He urged Obama to "get serious" about a balanced deficit reduction plan.

Wall Street is on edge over the fiscal cliff talks although investors still expect a deal. The S&P 500 stock index slipped 0.76 percent on Wednesday.

Business leaders have descended on Washington to lobby for a deal to avoid going over the cliff while putting public finances on a more sustainable path. Without an agreement to narrow deficits over the long run, the United States could eventually lose investors' trust, triggering a debt crisis.

An acrimonious presidential campaign that culminated in Obama's re-election on November 6 has added to the bad blood in Washington between Obama and congressional Republicans.

The two sides also clashed bitterly last year over the government's limit on borrowing - known as the debt ceiling - an episode that nearly led the nation to default on its debt.

On Wednesday, Obama said the fiscal cliff must not get bogged down with negotiations over the debt ceiling, an issue that must be dealt with again early next year.

But Boehner's offer to raise the debt ceiling enough for another year of borrowing is facing opposition from a large group of Republicans, a House Republican aide said.

LITMUS TEST

Any fiscal cliff agreement by Obama and the Republican leadership would need the support of their parties' rank and file in Congress, and Thursday's vote on Plan B will be a test of Boehner's ability to deliver votes on any eventual deal.

Boehner faces opposition from Republican Tea Party conservatives over his concession to raise tax rates. But in a sign some conservatives are coming around to Boehner's position, anti-tax activist Grover Norquist gave his blessing to the bill.

Other conservative groups, including the influential Club for Growth, are urging Republicans to vote against Plan B.

Obama and Boehner appear to have bridged their biggest ideological differences but remain hung up on the mix of tax hikes and spending cuts meant to narrow the budget gap.

"What separates us is probably a few hundred billion dollars," Obama said.

The White House wants taxes to rise on household incomes above $400,000 a year, a concession from Obama's opening proposal for a $250,000 income threshold.

If a deal is not reached soon, some $600 billion in tax hikes and spending cuts are set to begin next month.

Senior administration officials described negotiations as at a standstill and Obama warned he would ask everyone involved in the talks, "what it is that's holding it up?"

Still, the top Republican in the Senate said a resolution to the stalemate could come by the end of the week.

"There's still enough time for us to finish all of our work before this weekend, if we're all willing to stay late and work hard," said Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell.

Many Democrats dislike the president's offer to reduce benefits to seniors, although some political allies of Obama have given signs they feel they could swallow this concession.

"I don't like these particular changes," said Democratic Representative Chris Van Hollen, a member of the House leadership from Maryland. But he added: "What people are seeing is the president willing to compromise in order to get things done."

Dana White praises openly gay Liz Carmouche: ?It takes a brave person?

When Liz Carmouche steps into the octagon to fight Ronda Rousey for the UFC women's bantamweight belt, it will be a historic moment. Not only will UFC 157 feature the first UFC women's fight, it will also be the first time an openly gay fighter will fight in the UFC.

UFC president Dana White praised Carmouche, an ex-Marine, for coming out.

"There's a lot of gay athletes out there and athletes and actresses. It takes a brave person to come out and admit it because they're always afraid of what its going to do to their career or how people are going to treat them afterwards. I love what she did."

White came under fire in 2010 when he used a gay slur on one of his video blogs. He later apologized. When talking about Carmouche, he addressed his own reputation and shared his thoughts on same-sex marriage.

"I know I have the big ?homophobe' persona and people think I'm some homophobe. I'm the furthest thing from it. I think it's ridiculous it's 2013 and the government tells two people they can't marry each other. Who is the government to tell two people who say they love each other they can't be married? It's ridiculous."

Though it's not quite 2013, it's encouraging to hear White say not only that he supports Carmouche and same-sex marriage but that he hopes other fighters find the courage to come out, too.

Among the NFL, MLB, NHL and NBA, there are no active and openly gay players. Retired athletes, like basketball player John Amaechi and football player Wade Davis, have come out after they stopped playing.

However, athletes like Carmouche show that the tide is turning and athletes are more comfortable with not hiding their sexuality. Openly gay athletes like diver Matthew Mitcham and Natasha Kai have competed in the Olympics. More and more athletes are speaking out in favor of LGBTQ rights.

Mayor Jim Suttle pushes for gun limits

Omaha Mayor Jim Suttle is pushing for federal leaders to put tighter restrictions on who can buy guns ? and what types of guns they can buy.

Tuesday, the mayor signed a letter that?s being sent to President Barack Obama and members of Congress from hundreds of other city leaders from around the country. It pushes for mandated criminal background checks on all gun sales and also for getting more military-style weapons and high-capacity magazines out of circulation.

?While there is no law that can prevent every act of violence, we can and must do more to ensure that we keep guns out of the hands of dangerous individuals and assist our law enforcement officers in providing for the safety of our public,? Suttle said.

Rangers looks beyond Scotland on stock market return

LONDON (Reuters) - Rangers Football Club, which has raised 22 million pounds in a stock market listing, said talk of a European football league made it a good investment despite its demotion to Scotland's fourth tier.

Money raised from listing on London's junior AIM market will be used to support the Glasgow club's recovery after one of the most spectacular downfalls in British football.

Scottish champions a record 54 times, Rangers were demoted three levels to the bottom tier of the Scottish game after their parent company was liquidated earlier this year.

Chief executive Charles Green, who took over after the club collapsed, said Rangers and perennial Glasgow rivals Celtic were too big for Scottish football.

"There are now serious talks going on about a restructuring of Scottish football and the European game," he told Reuters.

"There are lots of alternatives. Rangers, being the size it is, will be involved in those restructuring moves. That is where institutions see the growth story."

Rangers lead the Scottish third division by six points after a 3-0 home win over Annan Athletic on Tuesday in front of a crowd of more than 42,000 - a huge attendance for that level of the game.

Clubs from Europe's smaller domestic competitions have periodically talked about combining to try to keep pace with wealthy teams from England's Premier League, Germany's Bundesliga and Spain's La Liga.

"OLD FIRM" REUNITED

Green said he was delighted with a flotation that valued the club at 45 million pounds. Initial market reaction was positive, with shares adding 4 pence to 74 pence by 8.45 a.m British time.

Celtic, which has dominated Scottish football with Rangers for decades, is also listed on AIM. The two clubs, who have an often bitter rivalry, are known collectively as the "Old Firm".

After a series of listings in the 1990s, investors have grown wary of buying stocks in European football clubs whose fortunes are tied up with results on the field and which often spent heavily chasing success.

Manchester United, English champions a record 19 times, bucked the trend by listing in New York in August, valuing the club at $2.3 billion at the time.

Rangers raised 17 million pounds from large institutional investors and 5 million from fans. Investors were left out of pocket earlier this year when the club went bust.

"A week before Christmas, this is an amazing effort from the fans," said Green.

The club planned to limit its wage bill to a third of turnover, a low level by the spendthrift standards of football, and has vowed not to take on bank debt.

"Being demoted to the fourth tier of Scottish football, there is not a huge financial pressure on us," Green said. "It gives us time to structure this business in a way that is financially stable."

How do small businesses in Washington feel about the fiscal cliff debate?

Small business owners around Washington state support closing corporate tax loopholes and ending Bush-era tax cuts for wealthy individuals, according to a new survey.

The Main Street Alliance of Washington, a coalition of more than 2,000 small businesses, conducted door-to-door and telephone surveys of over 100 small business owners in 15 cities and released the results today, as President Barack Obama and lawmakers in the other Washington tried to hammer out a deal to avoid the upcoming ?fiscal cliff.?

Among the survey?s findings:

- 88 percent said Congress should end the Bush tax cuts for those with incomes above $250,000, while just 4 percent supported renewing the cuts.

- 72 percent said big corporations pay less than their fair share of taxes. Only 3 percent said they pay more than their fair share, and 8 percent said they pay their fair share.

- Asked to choose between making more budget cuts or closing corporate tax loopholes, 87 percent chose closing loopholes, while just 2 percent chose more budget cuts.

In a release about the survey, the group quoted Tiffany Turner, owner of Adrift Hotel in Long Beach, offering her view on the tax-cut debate taking place in Washington, D.C., right now:

?There are over 100 small businesses in my city of Long Beach, and there are zero that I am aware of that make over $250,000 a year,? Turner said. ?It?s time to do what?s right for small businesses and the country: end the Bush tax cuts for the richest 2 percent.?

High Level Communist Party Documents Reveal Nationwide Campaign Against Chinese Christians

ICC Note: In a stunning leak, ChinaAid, a Christian human rights organization, has posted high level documentation distributed by the Communist Party Central Committee directing government authorities to take action against the spread of Christianity in Chinese ?university campuses. The documentation calls Christian evangelism on Chinese college campuses a targeted infiltration by the United States in an attempt to undermine the growth of China. It also advocates firing or expelling professors and students that engage in "illegal" Christian activities.?

12/18/2012 China (ChinaAid) - ChinaAid on Tuesday released a secret Communist Party Central Committee document it had obtained that contains detailed instructions for a nationwide crackdown on evangelism on college and university campuses and among students, confirming that China's leadership at the highest levels is behind the increased Christian persecution of recent years.

The May 15, 2011 document entitled "Suggestions for doing a good job of resisting foreign use of religion to infiltrate institutes of higher education and preventing campus evangelism" and known as Document 18 was drawn up by the ministries of education, public security, state security and foreign affairs, the State Administration of Religious Affairs, and the United Front Work Committee, the party organ that oversees religious affairs. As befitting a document of the highest importance, it was distributed by the Communist Party Central Committee and the State Council. Only 8,330 copies were printed, and these were distributed to party, government and military offices at or above the municipal or regiment level only.

Its references to "religion" refer mainly to Christianity, and it named the United States as leading the attempts to use Christianity to infiltrate China's institutes of higher education. ChinaAid obtained the document, which has never been publicly released, from informed sources at the top levels of the Chinese Communist Party.

"With China's rapid economic and social development and the steady growth of China's comprehensive national strength, ... [f]oreign hostile forces have put even greater emphasis on using religion to infiltrate China to carry out their political plot to westernize and divide China," the document said. "Foreign forces regard institutes of higher education as key targets for using religion, Christianity in particular, for infiltration."

"The goal of foreign use of religion to infiltrate institutes of higher education is not just to expand religious influence but even more to vie with us for our young people, our next generation," it said.

"The real harm and the long-term effects ... must not be underestimated, and forceful measures must be taken to respond actively and effectively," Document 18 said, calling the job of resisting the infiltration and preventing campus evangelism "important to the fate of the country and the fate of the people; it has important and far-reaching implications."

Ooh, this sounds very interesting! I have one quick question; do we have to use pictures of our characters in the character sheet, or are we allowed to just write a description? If we're allowed to just write out the description, may I pretty please reserve the Lead Vampire? Thank you very much!

Worst Inflatable Christmas Decorations (PHOTOS)

Whatever your particular interest, there's probably some kind of Christmas lawn decoration to match it. That's not always a good thing.

The inflatable lawn decoration already has an air of tackiness to it, but add a hot tub, surf board or race car to the tableau and it goes to a whole other level. Check out the worst collection of inflatable Christmas decorations we could find, and if you already own one, just know you're that neighbor.
