GameStick reveals final backer-aided design, dock for peripherals

Gamestick reveals final backeraided design

Now that the Android-powered game console on a stick, GameStick, has been fully funded (five times over), another piece of the puzzle is falling into place: its final design. Taking suggestions from the Kickstarter backers that supported the device in the first place, the final design of the controller reflects, "a more ergonomic form with extended grips and a tapered shape to better sit in the hand." The HDMI stick that previous popped out from the bottom of the controller now rests around back -- it's now got a MicroSD slot built in as well, allowing up to 32GB of expandable memory (bringing the maximum of expandable memory up to 104GB -- that's a lot of Android games).

A docking station is also in the cards, which enables a whole mess of peripherals via USB, HDMI, and ethernet ports -- it's powered separately, so you can charge your GameStick controller without having to turn on the console. You can also charge your controller on it wirelessly, according to PlayJam. All said, it's got one ethernet port, a full size SD card reader, three USB ports, and three HDMI ports (one out, two in), and comes as part of an option $109 bundle on the Kickstarter page. As for its sale price separately from the GameStick, PlayJam's staying mum for now.

GAMESTICK UNVEILS FINAL DESIGN INSPIRED BY KICKSTARTER COMMUNITY

London & San Francisco; January 29th, 2013; As the GameStick Kickstarter campaign (http://kck.st/12SSvMO) enters its final few days, the team announce their final designs of the device as well as a new docking station for every peripheral conceivable.

GameStick; Kickstarter´s most recent success story, currently sits at over 500% of its original target with over $500K raised at the time of writing. The team waits on tenterhooks to discover the final figure to be revealed at 04:23 PST on Friday 1st February.

"It´s hard to believe that we launched GameStick just a few short weeks ago. The Kickstarter campaign has been a roller coaster of a ride and one which has given us more feedback than we could ever have possibly imagined." says PlayJam´s CMO, Anthony Johnson, "We have been able to take that input and literally better shape our product to give our backers a truly bespoke creation - one which has been designed by the Kickstarter community that backed it."

The new design sees subtle changes to the controller, which gets a more ergonomic form with extended grips and a tapered shape to better sit in the hand. The housing for the HDMI stick has been moved to the rear of the controller and the stick itself now supports an expandable 32GB MicroSD card slot in response to overwhelming demand. The finish has also been meticulously designed meet the highest of standards.

Additional requests from the backer community resulted last week in the GameStick team announcing support for peripheral hardware through a previously unspecified docking station. The dock brings on board a number of sought after features such as; wire-free charging for the controller, a number of USB and HDMI ports to support peripheral hardware such as keyboards, mice, microphones and cameras as well as support for yet more storage bringing the total potential capacity of the bundle up to 104GB.

"The GameStick Dock is a prime example of how we have moved rapidly to innovate while still in the pre-production phase," continued Johnson, "it has made for a 'hairy' 30 days but we think the results are worth it and we are delighted that we have been able to tailor the product as much as we have in such a short time-frame"

The GameStick Kickstarter campaign has reached its first two stretch goals with just under $60K to go to hit it´s third and final stretch which will add a number of colour options to its range; a target the team hopes to hit before close. Backers have been urged to vote for their favourite colours on the GameStick Facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/GameStickNews) in a poll to establish the final color.

Consumer alert: new health care markets on the way

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Buying your own health insurance will never be the same.

This fall, new insurance markets called exchanges will open in each state, marking the long-awaited and much-debated debut of President Barack Obama's health care overhaul.

The goal is quality coverage for millions of uninsured people in the United States. What the reality will look like is anybody's guess ? from bureaucracy, confusion and indifference to seamless service and satisfied customers.

Exchanges will offer individuals and their families a choice of private health plans resembling what workers at major companies already get. The government will help many middle-class households pay their premiums, while low-income people will be referred to safety-net programs they might qualify for.

Most people will go online to pick a plan when open enrollment starts Oct. 1. Counselors will be available at call centers and in local communities, too. Some areas will get a storefront operation or kiosks at the mall. Translation to Spanish and other languages spoken by immigrants will be provided.

When you pick a plan, you'll no longer have to worry about getting turned down or charged more because of a medical problem. If you're a woman, you can't be charged a higher premium because of gender. Middle-aged people and those nearing retirement will get a price break: They can't be charged more than three times what younger customers pay, compared with six times or seven times today.

If all this sounds too good to be true, remember that nothing in life is free and change isn't easy.

Starting Jan. 1, 2014, when coverage takes effect in the exchanges, virtually everyone in the country will be required by law to have health insurance or face fines. The mandate is meant to get everybody paying into the insurance pool.

Obama's law is called the Affordable Care Act, but some people in the new markets might experience sticker shock over their premiums. Smokers will face a financial penalty. Younger, well-to-do people who haven't seen the need for health insurance may not be eligible for income-based assistance with their premiums.

Many people, even if they get government help, will find that health insurance still doesn't come cheaply. Monthly premiums will be less than the mortgage or rent, but maybe more than a car loan. The coverage, however, will be more robust than most individual plans currently sold.

Consider a hypothetical family of four making $60,000 and headed by a 40-year-old. They'll be eligible for a government tax credit of $7,193 toward their annual premium of $12,130. But they'd still have to pay $4,937, about 8 percent of their income, or about $410 a month.

A lower-income family would get a better deal from the government's sliding-scale subsidies.

Consider a similar four-person family making $35,000. They'd get a $10,742 tax credit toward the $12,130 annual premium. They'd have to pay $1,388, about 4 percent of their income, or about $115 a month.

The figures come from the nonpartisan Kaiser Family Foundation's online Health Reform Subsidy Calculator. But while the government assistance is called a tax credit and computed through the income tax system, the money doesn't come to you in a refund. It goes directly to insurers.

Obama's law is the biggest thing that's happened to health care since Medicare and Medicaid in the 1960s. But with open enrollment for exchange plans less than 10 months away, there's a dearth of consumer information. It's as if the consumer angle got drowned out by the political world's dispute over "Obamacare," the dismissive label coined by Republican foes.

Yet exchanges are coming to every state, even those led by staunch GOP opponents of the overhaul, such as Govs. Rick Perry of Texas and Nikki Haley of South Carolina. In their states and close to 20 others that are objecting, the exchanges will be operated by the federal government, over state opposition. Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius has pledged that every citizen will have access to an exchange come next Jan. 1, and few doubt her word.

But what's starting to dawn on Obama administration officials, activists, and important players in the health care industry is that the lack of consumer involvement, unless reversed, could turn the big health care launch into a dud. What if Obama cut the ribbon and nobody cared?

"The people who stand to benefit the most are the least aware of the changes that are coming," said Rachel Klein, executive director of Enroll America, a nonprofit that's trying to generate consumer enthusiasm.

"My biggest fear is that we get to Oct. 1 and people haven't heard there is help coming, and they won't benefit from it as soon as they can," she added. "I think it is a realistic fear."

Even the term "exchange" could be a stumbling block. It was invented by policy nerds. Although the law calls them "American Health Benefit Exchanges," Sebelius is starting to use the term "marketplaces" instead.

Polls underscore the concerns. A national survey last October found that only 37 percent of the uninsured said they would personally be better off because of the health care law. Twenty-three percent said they would be worse off in the Kaiser poll, while 31 percent said it would make no difference to them.

Insurers, hospitals, drug companies and other businesses that stand to benefit from the hundreds of billions of dollars the government will pump in to subsidize coverage aren't waiting for Washington to educate the public.

Blue Cross and Blue Shield plans, for example, are trying to carve out a new role for themselves as explainers of the exchanges. Somewhere around 12 million people now purchase coverage individually, but the size of the market could double or triple with the new approach, and taxpayers will underwrite it.

"Consumers are expecting their health insurance provider to be a helpful navigator to them," said Maureen Sullivan, a senior vice president for the Blues' national association. "We see 2013 as a huge year for education."

One goal is to help consumers master the "metals," the four levels of coverage that will be available through exchange plans ? bronze, silver, gold, and platinum.

Blue Cross is also working with tax preparer H&R Block, which is offering its customers a health insurance checkup at no additional charge this tax season. Returns filed this year for 2012 will be used by the government to help determine premium subsidies for 2014.

"This tax season is one of historical significance," said Meg Sutton, senior advisor for tax and health care at H&R Block. "The tax return you are filing is going to be key to determining your health care benefits on the exchange."

Only one state, Massachusetts, now has an exchange resembling what the administration wants to see around the country. With six years in business, the Health Connector enrolls about 240,000 Massachusetts residents. It was created under the health overhaul plan passed by former Republican Gov. Mitt Romney and has gotten generally positive reviews.

Connector customer Robert Schultz is a Boston area startup business consultant who got his MBA in 2008, when the economy was tanking. Yet he was able to find coverage when he graduated and hang on to his insurance through job changes since. Schultz says that's freed him to pursue his ambition of becoming a successful entrepreneur ? a job creator instead of an employee.

"It's being portrayed by opponents as being socialistic," Schultz said.. "It is only socialistic in the sense of making sure that everybody in society is covered, because the cost of making sure everybody is covered in advance is much less than the cost of putting out fires."

The Connector's executive director, Glen Shor, said his state has proven the concept works and he's confident other states can succeed on their own terms.

"There is no backing away from all the challenges associated with expanding coverage," Shor said. "We are proud in Massachusetts that we overcame what had been years of policy paralysis."

EDITOR'S NOTE _ This is the first story in a two-part series that provides an overview of the major changes in health insurance facing Americans under the Affordable Care Act, President Barack Obama's health care overhaul.

Al-Qaida in Yemen's second-in-command reported killed in drone strike

AP

Saeed al-Shihri, deputy leader of al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula in a photo from undated video posted on a militant-leaning Web site in January 2009, and provided by the SITE Intelligence Group.

By Ahmed al Haj, The Associated Press

SANAA, Yemen?? Al-Qaida's No. 2 in Yemen died in a U.S. drone attack last year in southern Yemen, the country's official news agency and a security official said Thursday.

Saeed al-Shihri, a Saudi national who fought in Afghanistan and spent six years in the U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay, was wounded in a missile attack in the southern city of Saada on Oct. 28, according to SABA news agency.

The agency said that he had fallen into a coma since then. It was not clear when he actually died.

A security official said that the missile had been fired by a U.S.-operated, unmanned drone aircraft. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the press.

Yemen had previously announced al-Shihri's death in a Sept. 10 drone attack in the province of Hadramawt. A subsequent DNA test however proved that the body recovered was not that of al-Shihri.

On Oct. 22, al-Shihri denied his own death in audio message posted on Jihadi websites.

Also known by the nom de guerre Abu Sufyan al-Azdi, he denounced at the time the Yemeni government for spreading the "rumor about my death ... as though the killing of the mujahideen (holy warriors) by America is a victory to Islam and Muslims."

Al-Shihri went through Saudi Arabia's famous "rehabilitation" institutes after he returned to his home country, but then he fled to Yemen and became deputy to Nasser al-Wahishi, the leader of an al-Qaida group.

Al-Shihri's death is considered a major blow to al-Qaida's Yemen branch, known as al-Qaida in The Arabian Peninsula. Washington considers it the most dangerous of the group's offshoots.

Al-Qaida in Yemen has been linked to several attempted attacks on U.S. targets, including the foiled Christmas Day 2009 bombing of an airliner over Detroit and explosives-laden parcels intercepted aboard cargo flights last year.

In 2011, a high-profile U.S. drone strike killed U.S.-born Anwar al-Awlaki, who had been linked to the planning and execution of several attacks targeting U.S. and Western interests, including the attempt to down a Detroit-bound airliner in 2009 and the plot to bomb cargo planes in 2010.

Yemen, the Arab world's poorest nation, has fallen into lawlessness since the start of an uprising in 2011, when millions of Yemenis took to the streets demanding the ouster of their longtime authoritarian ruler Ali Abdullah Saleh.

Al-Qaida militants exploited the unrest and took control of large swaths of land in the south until last spring, when the military, backed by the U.S., managed to drive hundreds of militants out of major cities and towns.

Since then, the group has carried out deadly attacks targeting mostly security and military officials, including suicide bombings that targeted military and security compounds.

Mayor Predicts ?Waco-Style Standoff? In Response to Obama Gun Confiscation

?It?s not going to end well?

by Paul Joseph Watson, InfoWars:

Expressing his opposition to the New York SAFE Act, Gloversville Mayor Dayton King has sensationally warned that any federal gun confiscation program could lead to a ?Waco-style standoff? in rural areas of America.

?Most people are law-abiding citizens and may go ahead and sell those or turn those over, but you?re going to have a fraction of people that are going to take a stand, and I can just predict a Waco-style standoff in some rural area and it?s not going to end well,??Mayor King told Fox 23 News.

During the Waco siege in April 1993, after failing to execute a search warrant against the Branch Davidians, federal agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) burned down the Mount Carmel Center, slaughtering seventy-six men, women and children.

(AP Photo/Joe Raymond)

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) ? Not once but twice after he supposedly discovered his online girlfriend of three years never even existed, Notre Dame All-American linebacker Manti Te'o perpetuated the heartbreaking story about her death.

An Associated Press review of news coverage found that the Heisman Trophy runner-up talked about his doomed love in a Web interview on Dec. 8 and again in a newspaper interview published Dec. 10. He and the university said Wednesday that he learned on Dec. 6 that it was all a hoax, that not only wasn't she dead, she wasn't real.

On Thursday, a day after Te'o's inspiring, playing-through-heartache story was exposed as a bizarre lie, Te'o and Notre Dame faced questions from sports writers and fans about whether he really was duped, as he claimed, or whether he and the university were complicit in the hoax and misled the public, perhaps to improve his chances of winning the Heisman.

Yahoo sports columnist Dan Wetzel said the case has "left everyone wondering whether this was really the case of a na?ve football player done wrong by friends or a fabrication that has yet to play to its conclusion."

Gregg Doyel, national columnist for CBSSports.com, was more direct.

"Nothing about this story has been comprehensible, or logical, and that extends to what happens next," he wrote. "I cannot comprehend Manti Te'o saying anything that could make me believe he was a victim."

On Wednesday, Te'o and Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick said the player was drawn into a virtual romance with a woman who used the phony name Lennay Kekua, and was fooled into believing she died of leukemia in September. They said his only contact with the woman was via the Internet and telephone.

Te'o also lost his grandmother ? for real ? the same day his girlfriend supposedly died, and his role in leading Notre Dame to its best season in decades endeared him to fans and put him at the center of college football's biggest feel-good story of the year.

Relying on information provided by Te'o's family members, the South Bend Tribune reported in October that Te'o and Kekua first met, in person, in 2009, and that the two had also gotten together in Hawaii, where Te'o grew up.

Sports Illustrated posted a previously unpublished transcript of a one-on-one interview with Te'o from Sept. 23. In it, he goes into great detail about his relationship with Kekua and her physical ailments. He also mentioned meeting her for the first time after a game in California.

"We met just, ummmm, just she knew my cousin. And kind of saw me there so. Just kind of regular," he told SI.

Among the outstanding questions Thursday: Why didn't Te'o ever clarify the nature of his relationship as the story took on a life of its own?

Te'o's agent, Tom Condon, said the athlete had no plans to make any public statements Thursday in Bradenton, Fla., where he has been training with other NFL hopefuls at the IMG Academy.

Notre Dame said Te'o found out that Kekua was not a real person through a phone call he received at an awards ceremony in Orlando, Fla., on Dec. 6. He told Notre Dame coaches about the situation on Dec. 26.

The AP's media review turned up two instances during that gap when the football star mentioned Kekua in public.

Te'o was in New York for the Heisman presentation on Dec. 8 and, during an interview before the ceremony that ran on the WSBT.com, the website for a South Bend TV station, Te'o said: "I mean, I don't like cancer at all. I lost both my grandparents and my girlfriend to cancer. So I've really tried to go to children's hospitals and see, you know, children."

In a column that first ran in The Los Angeles Times, on Dec. 10, Te'o recounted why he played a few days after he found out Kekua died in September, and the day she was supposedly buried.

"She made me promise, when it happened, that I would stay and play," he said on Dec. 9 while attending a ceremony in Newport Beach, Calif., for the Lott Impact Awards.

On Wednesday, when Deadspin.com broke the story, Swarbrick said Notre Dame did not go public with its findings sooner because it expected the Te'o family to come forward first.

Asked if the NCAA was monitoring the Te'o story for possible rules violations, NCAA President Mark Emmert said:

"We don't know anything more than you do," he told reporters at the organization's convention in Dallas. "We're learning about this through the stories just the same as you are. But we have to wait and see what really transpired there. It's obviously (a) very disturbing story and it's hard to tell where the facts lie at this point.

"But Notre Dame is obviously looking into it and there will be a lot more to come forward. Right now, it just looks ... well, we don't know what the facts are, so I shouldn't comment beyond that."

Reporters were turned away at the main gate of IMG's sprawling, secure complex. Te'o remained on the grounds, said a person familiar with situation who spoke on condition of anonymity because neither Te'o nor IMG authorized the release of the information.

"This whole thing is so nutsy that I believe it only could have happened at Notre Dame, where mythology trumps common sense on a daily basis. ... Given the choice between reality and fiction, Notre Dame always will choose fiction," sports writer Rick Telander said in the Chicago Sun-Times.

"Which brings me to what I believe is the real reason Te'o and apparently his father, at least went along with this scheme: the Heisman Trophy.

Chicago Tribune columnist John Kass blasted both Te'o and Notre Dame.

"When your girlfriend dying of leukemia after suffering a car crash tells you she loves you, even if it might help you win the Heisman Trophy, you check it out," he said.

He said the university's failure to call a news conference and go public sooner means "Notre Dame is complicit in the lie."

"The school fell in love with the Te'o girlfriend myth," he wrote.

Denzel Washington modest about 6th Oscar nod

LONDON (AP) ? Oscar-winning actor Denzel Washington isn't taking his sixth nomination for granted, saying he's just happy that people still value his work.

Washington, who is in London for the U.K. premiere of "Flight" on Thursday night, is a best actor contender at the Academy Awards for playing alcoholic pilot Whip Whitaker in the film.

The 58-year-old American already has two Oscars to his name for "Glory" (1989) and "Training Day" (2001). His other nominations came for "City Freedom," ''Malcolm X" and "The Hurricane."

Washington says "it still feels good to know that people appreciate what you're doing."

After adding pilot to his long list of on-screen professions, where can Washington go next?

"I don't know. What's left? Milkman?" he joked.

"Flight" is released in the U.K. and Ireland on Feb. 1.

Quinton ?Rampage? Jackson is so over the UFC

Quinton "Rampage" Jackson will fight Glover Teixiera at UFC on Fox 6. If Jackson stays true to his word, it will be his last fight in the UFC. He has complained about being a part of the UFC time and time again. He reiterated on a pre-fight press call that he is done, done, done with the UFC. This is the last fight of his contract, and he has no plans to renegotiate with them.

"I think the UFC don't know how to treat the athletes, in my opinion," he said. "I feel like the fighters do a lot for the sport and I feel like we're not taken care of well enough. I feel like they're getting rich off all of us."

His cries are starting to sound like the lyrics to a Taylor Swift song. Jackson and the UFC are never ever ever getting back together. But if he doesn't fight for the UFC, his options for high-level MMA are limited. He said he could try other combat sports like kickboxing or boxing. Bellator could be an option, but one of Jackson's beefs with the UFC has been their matchmaking. The tournament set-up could be tough for him to deal with.

Either way, enjoy Jackson in the UFC while you can, because it's over for real this time.

MediaFire Launches Android App With 50GB Free Storage

MediaFire Android App

MediaFire is rolling out the red carpet for Android owners, unlocking 50GB of free storage along with its new Android-based storage application.

The app joins its iOS counterpart in providing on-the-go productivity for people who need to access and share files from anywhere.

"Users today demand the tools to not only access their content on the go, but do many of the same tasks traditionally performed on desktop computers," MediaFire CEO Derek Labian said in a statement.

MediaFire will provide Android users with 50GB of free storage, boasting that users will never have to worry about running out of space. Files are stored in the user's personal MediaFire account, and are accessible online and via the app.

The ability to view documents, spreadsheets, and presentations, stream video, and listen to audio is now at Android owners' fingertips, where they can also shoot and upload pictures and videos directly in the MediaFire app. Then, share files on the go via email, SMS, links, and through other Android apps.

According to CNET, there is no batch-upload option, nor does it offer Dropbox-style file/folder syncing; users must upload all files manually.

MediaFire offers personal, pro, and business memberships, beginning at $1.50 per month. The free plan limits long-term storage and caps maximum individual file size at 200MB, and allows only one customized folder link.

"2013 will mark a major year for online storage providers, and we plan to bring MediaFire to the forefront of this movement with the launch of several stellar products," Labian said.

The MediaFire Android application is now available for free in the Google Play store.

When an Employee Refuses Workers' Compensation Treatment

Blog By:?Garry Watts, CPCU, CRM

Based on the geographic location of your business, many state workers' compensation statutes limit and mandate certain employer actions when a worker is injured.? Depending on the state, there are specific timelines to follow and forms to complete.? But what about when a worker is injured and refuses to accept treatment or file a claim?? What are your responsibilities?? While the exact legal answer depends on your situation and state laws, consider the following to limit your liability.

When You Notice

If you notice that an employee has been injured, even if the employee has not mentioned it, gently bring it up and discuss the circumstances of the injury with the employee to determine whether the injury is job-related. Many state workers? compensation statutes obligate employers to report injuries as soon as they have knowledge of them. Delay in reporting the injury could result in much more costly claims. Completing the paperwork to report injuries is not an admission of your liability ? on the contrary, it could protect you.??

In the Case of Refusal

When you do discuss the injury with the employee, explain that reporting job-related injuries entitles injured workers to certain benefits while recovering from the injury. If the employee does not wish to file a claim for the injury, file the employer?s portion of the report with a statement of refusal to pursue a claim signed by the employee. It is crucial that you document this conversation to protect your organization from being penalized in the future.

Employees that do initially report injuries but then refuse treatment under the physician or facility that your organization furnishes should sign a similar form confirming this refusal.

Benefits for Employees that Refuse Treatment

State workers? compensation statutes vary, but in most cases, workers? compensation benefits are suspended for employees that refuse to comply with any reasonable request for examination or refuse to accept medical service or physical rehabilitation which the employer elects to furnish. Benefits may not be payable for this period of refusal of treatment ? check with your workers? compensation carrier.

What to Do Now

It is important that you prepare for an eventual employee refusal to submit a claim or refusal to accept treatment for a workplace injury. All employers should have a legal representative draft a form for refusal of treatment that complies with state requirements so it is immediately available when needed. Discuss with supervisors the importance of documenting and reporting all injuries, whether or not the worker chooses to report them.

Workers? compensation insurance is obligatory in most states. To? learn?more about the Injured Employee's Rights and Responsibilities, sign up for the free webinar on March 6th here.

2 alleged Russian spies on trial in Germany

BERLIN (AP) ? Dead letter drops. Fake papers with cover stories to match. Secret orders by radio from Moscow.

The accusations read like something out of the Cold War but the charges against a couple who went on trial Tuesday in the German city of Stuttgart stem primarily from the decades after the 1989 fall of the Berlin Wall.

Andreas and Heidrun Anschlag ? only the fake names on the fake Austrian passports they used to enter Germany are known ? are charged with giving Russia's foreign intelligence service information on German, EU and NATO security policies and more general details on Russian-German relations.

The pair, thought to be in their 40s or 50s, denied the espionage charges in Stuttgart state court but refused to make any other statements Tuesday.

German officials won't divulge details other than those in the indictment, but the Der Spiegel magazine reported that the same U.S. mole in the Russian intelligence service who tipped off the FBI about a ring of sleeper spies based in the U.S. also divulged the existence of the couple in Germany. The information from Col. Alexander Poteyev, who Moscow convicted in absentia last year of high treason and desertion, was then passed along to German intelligence officials, Spiegel reported.

The Russian Foreign Ministry in Moscow and U.S. Justice Department spokesman Dean Boyd in Washington both declined to comment on the case.

Like the U.S. cell, Andreas and Heidrun Anschlag were able to work comfortably in a Western culture and pass unnoticed.

According to the indictment, Andreas arrived in Germany in 1988, the year before the fall of the Berlin Wall. Heidrun arrived in 1990, the year Germany was reunified. Both claimed to be Austrian citizens of South American background, prosecutors said.

"With this backstory, underpinned by false Austrian passports, they built a normal existence within society to disguise their intelligence-gathering operations," prosecutors said.

They were charged with spying over 20 years until their arrest in October 2011. Prosecutors said between October 2008 and August 2011 the two were in contact with a third agent, who provided them with documents about EU and NATO operations from the Netherlands.

A Dutch Foreign Ministry employee, whose name has not been released, was arrested last March on suspicion of being the contact person who stole the information. The employee is due to go on trial there later this month.

Andreas Anschlag then passed the information on to the SVR ? the main successor to Russia's KGB ? using secret drop-off locations, known as dead letter boxes, prosecutors alleged. It was not clear how sensitive the stolen material was, although the Dutch employee has been charged with "preparing to spread state secrets."

"During the duration of their intelligence activities, the accused were in regular contact with their handlers," prosecutors said in their indictment. "Their instructions were received mainly through a special agents' radio. Their reports were transmitted to the intelligence via satellite. They also used an Internet video portal for hidden messages."

For their work, the couple received at least ?100,000 ($135,000) a year in recent years, prosecutors said. If convicted, they could face up to 10 years in prison each.

A German federal agent will testify at the next court session.

Dropbox Android app adds photo albums and batch deleting

Sponsored links, if any, appear in green.

The Dropbox for Android app has been updated to include the option to delete multiple photos at once, or group several photos stored in the Camera Uploads section into custom albums. The Photo Tab in Dropbox previously stored a single stream of images and grouped them according to date that they were uploaded to the service. The latest version of the app gives users the option to create more traditional photo albums that store images according to their preference.

Dropbox creates new albums by long-pressing on one photo and then tapping other images that will be added to the album. Tapping the Albums logo, a square with a '+' sign on top of it, then leads to another page where a user can create a name for the album, add more photos, or share a link to another app or Android service. The original images are not moved or restored, so they are still visible in the standard chronological view of the Camera Uploads. Albums is a way of organizing images according to tags and simplifying the process of sharing multiple images at once.

Message Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg for $100?

Is it worth $100 to get a message through to Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg?

Facebook is trying to figure out how much its users are willing to cough up to ensure that a message they send to a non-friend ends up in the Facebook recipient's "Inbox" instead of landing in the dreaded "Other" folder where spam goes to die.

So Facebook is using its new $100 come-on to contact Zuckerberg to find out how much users are willing to pay. Not everyone who messages Zuckerberg will be asked to fork over a Benjamin during the test period that began Dec. 20. That means your message may never

get through.

"For example, if you want to send a message to someone you heard speak at an event but are not friends with, or if you want to message someone about a job opportunity, you can use this feature to reach their Inbox," Facebook said in a statement. "For the receiver, this test allows them to hear from people who have an important message to send them."

The company also has to decide who gets the money -- Facebook or the recipient.

Asked who they would pay to get a Facebook message to -- and how much they'd be willing to pay -- -- readers posted fierce responses on this newspaper's Facebook page:

"Not a solitary penny... ZILCH!" wrote Janie Chavez.

"This is plain stupid," said Jeanne McGarry

Morrison.

Brian Blau, Gartner's research director in consumer technologies, believes such volatile responses won't make any difference.

Blau says Facebook's new pay-to message approach is similar to paying an athlete to autograph a ball, donating money to hear a politician speak at a dinner, or dropping a few bucks to have your picture taken with an actor at Comic-Con.

"Any negative reaction will be counter-balanced by people who think it's fascinating and have an extra dollar or two and are willing to spend it to communicate with someone they've always wanted to communicate with," Blau said.

But Rebecca Lieb, an industry analyst with the Altimeter Group, said Facebook's plan has frightening implications for users who don't want messages from certain people, especially women with restraining orders or are being stalked.

"This could make Facebook, for real or perceived reasons, a scarier or creepier place," Lieb said.

CES 2013: Wilson Electronics introduces the Sleek 4G booster to get your iPhone more signal

Wilson Electronics has been making cell phone signal boosters for a while now, both for home use and for larger scale settings like offices and commercial use. But the company is turning to something more personal with its new Sleek 4G cell phone booster, which is a phone stand that will make your iPhone's signal (or a signal from any phone, really) up to ten times more powerful.

The booster, which is shipping next week, basically consists of a phone stand that you can either place on your desk or stick on your car's dashboard, and then a cord leading off of it that connects to an antenna with a magnetic base. That's it -- you don't need to actually connect your phone up at all, because the stand will just grab the signal automatically.

The stand itself has a few different prongs on the sides that you can adjust depending on what phone you're using, but other than that, it just boosts a signal, and well. A normal phone signal, according to Wilson, runs at about 200 mW, but with the Sleek 4G adding a boost, the signal can reach up to 2000 mW.

Wilson's reps told us that most people think of using cell phone boosters out in more rural areas, but given all of the holes and issues in more populated areas, it can be helpful in bigger cities, too. And the booster has one other big benefit: It'll increase the battery life on the phone. By making sure the signal is always strong, Wilson says that many users have seen phones last longer than before.

At $199, this isn't a small investment for sure. But if you constantly have problems with your iPhone's signal and could use a way to keep it going whether you're in a home or office or out and about in your car, Wilson's Sleek 4G booster could help.

Samsung Galaxy S III Off to Good Start, Says Raymond James

Raymond James?s Tavis McCourt this morning writes that Samsung Electronics?s (005930KS) recently released ?Galaxy S III? smartphone running Google?s (GOOG) Android operating system is getting ?very positive feedback? at phone company outlets that he?s called ?across the country? in the last several days.

After making a number of calls over the last few days to carrier stores following the arrival of the Samsung Galaxy S III, we feel comfortable in saying that the Galaxy S3 launch appears to be going relatively well. From our discussions with store sales reps, demand for the Galaxy S III appears to be strong at all U.S. carriers. In particular, Galaxy S III is benefiting from its LTE and size advantage over the iPhone 4S, although we note Apple will likely address both these issues with the iPhone 5 quite soon.?On average, it appears each store received roughly 10-20 phones in its initial shipment and most stores sold out within 2-4 days. Stores are receiving supply replenishments every few days but in smaller batches than launch day. This is a similar pattern that we have seen for most flagship Android devices historically. Supply and demand remain out of balance currently as most follow- on shipments are sold almost immediately. At both AT&T and Verizon, the nation?s two largest carriers, the Samsung Galaxy III seems to be the top selling phone based on consensus replies from store staff at this early stage of launch. In most cases the iPhone remains the second best-selling phone in stores, but we suspect demand has begun to taper off ahead of the iPhone 5 launch.

McCourt thinks the success of the Galaxy S III is a near-term threat more to Research in Motion (RIMM) and HTC (2498TW), Google?s Motorola business, and to Nokia (NOK) than it is to Apple, though ?that of course is said with the belief that Apple will live up to market expectations for the iPhone 5 this fall.?

Samsung shares today fell 1.2% to ?1,154,000 in Seoul trading. Apple shares are down 74 cents at $606.20, a standout decliner in an otherwise up market today.

NFL fantasy football: Mike Mularkey out in Jacksonville

Jaguars fire Mularkey:?The Jacksonville Jaguars fired head coach?Mike Mularkey Thursday, a move that had been expected for the past few days ? ever since David Caldwell was hired as the team?s new general manager. The Jaguars finished the season at 2-14 and ranked near the bottom of the league in both total offense and defense. It certainly didn?t help that?Maurice Jones-Drew?engaged in an extended holdout then missed the majority of the season with a foot injury. Neither was it a positive that?Blaine Gabbert failed to take a big step forward or that?Justin Blackmon struggled most of the year. However, there are positives in place for the next head coach. Namely, Jones-Drew should have plenty of time to rest and recover, Blackmon seemed to figure things out near the end of the year and ? perhaps biggest of all ? the surprise emergence of?Cecil Shorts III. That?s all to say that this team isn?t completely devoid of offensive talent. It will be necessary to add something on the offensive line (Jacksonville allowed 50 sacks, third-most in the league), but with the right offensive system, there could be some fantasy value there for 2013.

Starks could return: Green Bay Packers running back?James Starks could be back in the lineup for Saturday?s game against the 49ers. Starks hasn?t played since suffering a bruised knee in Week 13 while?DuJuan Harris has ascended to the top of the depth chart. If Starks is cleared to play, it?s unclear what his role would be or how many snaps he would see. In addition to competing with Harris for playing time, the Packers have also used?Ryan Grant to help with the rushing duties. Both of those backs have already pushed?Alex Green?well down the depth chart, so it?s hard to imagine Starks seeing a huge workload in his return. Oh, and there?s also the issue of trying to break down a Niners defense that allowed the fourth-fewest rushing yards to opponents during the regular season.

Lions seeking RBs: For years, the Detroit Lions have been on the prowl for quality wide receivers and it hasn?t been completely fruitless, landing the team?Calvin Johnson. But after struggling with a mostly one-dimensional offense this season, Lions general manager Martin Mayhew says the team will likely turn its attention to finding a top-notch running back. This season, the rushing duties were split mostly between?Mikel Leshoure?and?Joique Bell as the team waited for the return of Jahvid Best ? which never happened. If the Lions decide to go the free agency route, guys like?Reggie Bush?or?Felix Jones could be on their radar.

(AP) ? A private delegation including Google's Eric Schmidt is urging North Korea to allow more open Internet access and cellphones to benefit its citizens, the mission's leader said Wednesday in the country with some of the world's tightest controls on information.

Former New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson also said his nine-member group called on North Korea to put a moratorium on missile launches and nuclear tests that have prompted U.N. sanctions, and the delegation asked for fair and humane treatment for an American citizen detained. He spoke in an exclusive interview in Pyongyang with The Associated Press.

The visit has been criticized for appearing to hijack U.S. diplomacy and boost Pyongyang's profile after North Korea's latest, widely condemned rocket launch. Richardson has said has said the delegation is on a private, humanitarian trip.

Schmidt, the executive chairman of the U.S.-based Internet giant Google, is the highest-profile American business executive to visit North Korea since leader Kim Jong Un took power a year ago.

On Wednesday, Schmidt toured the frigid quarters of the brick building in central Pyongyang that is the heart of North Korea's own computer industry. He asked pointed questions about North Korea's new tablet computers as well as its Red Star operating system, and he briefly donned a pair of 3-D goggles during a tour of the Korea Computer Center.

Schmidt has not said publicly what he hopes to get out of his visit to North Korea. However, he has been a vocal proponent of Internet freedom and openness, and is publishing a book in April with Google Ideas think tank director Jared Cohen about the power of global connectivity in transforming people's lives, policies and politics.

Richardson told The Associated Press that his delegation was bringing a message that more openness would benefit North Korea. Most in the country have never logged onto the Internet, and the authoritarian government strictly limits access to the World Wide Web.

"The citizens of the DPRK (North Korea) will be better off with more cellphones and an active Internet. Those are the ... messages we've given to a variety of foreign policy officials, scientists" and government officials, Richardson said.

The four-day trip, which began Monday, is taking place at a delicate time in U.S.-North Korean relations. Less than a month ago, North Korea shot a satellite into space on a long-range rocket, a launch widely celebrated in Pyongyang but condemned by Washington and others as a banned test of missile technology.

The State Department criticized the trip as "unhelpful" at a time when the U.S. is rallying support for U.N. Security Council action.

Spokesman Peter Velasco said from Washington that he did not believe the delegation had been in contact with U.S. officials since they arrived in Pyongyang.

However, Richardson said the delegation has pressed the North Koreans for a moratorium on missile launches and nuclear tests.

In 2006 and 2009, North Korea followed up similar launches with nuclear tests. Pyongyang is believed to be working on mastering technology that would allow it to mount a nuclear device on a long-range rocket capable of striking the United States.

Richardson also said the delegation is pushing for "fair and humane treatment" of an American, Kenneth Bae, now in North Korean custody on suspicion of committing "hostile" acts against the state.

The group also has urged government officials and scientists to offer more cellphones and to open up the Internet to the North Korean people, he said.

North Korea has exercised strict control over its population of 24 million since it was founded by Kim Il Sung in 1948, including tight rules on the flow of information and close monitoring of the people's interaction with the outside world.

But as the Asian nation's tiny economy has languished in its isolation, the government has sought in recent years to turn its economy around by carefully and cautiously reaching out to foreign nations ? primarily neighboring China and Southeast Asian allies ? for help.

Young North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, who took power a year ago following the death of his father, Kim Jong Il, has made improving the economy a focal point of national policy for 2013, and has urged the people to expand their knowledge of science and technology to reach that goal.

Across the snowy capital, new propaganda signs and slogans reiterate those goals, exhorting the people to "break through the cutting edge" and "push back the frontiers" of science and technology in the spirit of the Dec. 12 space launch.

The number of cell phone users has surpassed 1.5 million in a few short years, with help from the Egyptian telecommunications giant Orascom, which provides a 3G cell phone service.

However, offering open Internet access has not been part of the strategy. Experts see North Korea as one of the least connected countries in the world.

Though global broadband Internet is available in North Korea, few have permission to log onto the World Wide Web. Those with computers and Internet access typically are restricted to a domestic Intranet site that filters the information and publications available to North Koreans.

On Tuesday, Schmidt, Richardson and their delegation chatted with students at Pyongyang's elite Kim Il Sung University who have permission to access the global Internet for research purposes.

On Wednesday, the group toured the main library in Pyongyang, the Grand People's Study House, where locals still in their winter coats were crowded into drafty, unheated halls at computers with Intranet access to the library's archive of books, documents and newspapers.

Later, the delegation visited the multi-story Korea Computer Center, the hub of North Korea's software and computer product development, where a quote from Kim Jong Il reads: "Now is the era for science and technology. It is the era of computers."

Inside an atrium exhibition hall lined with widescreen displays showing off North Korea's computer products, the Google group fiddled around with the new Samjiyon tablet computer utilizing foreign-made hardware and North Korean software and linked to the Internet through a wifi router.

They learned about North Korea's data encryption software, face recognition devices, video chat room software and instant messaging services.

So far, the computer center has teamed up with nations including China, Russia and India to develop products ? but is hoping to reach out to establish partnerships with other countries also, officials told Schmidt and Richardson.

Schmidt, who as chief executive of Google until 2011 oversaw the Internet search provider's expansion into a global Internet giant, speaks frequently about the importance of providing people around the world with Internet access and technology.

Google now has offices in more than 40 countries, including Russia, South Korea and China, another country criticized for systematic Internet censorship.

There are no major U.S. firms operating in North Korea, which fought against the United States in the Korean War of the 1950s. The foes signed a truce in 1953 to end the fighting, but never a peace treaty, and the two countries still do not have diplomatic relations.

U.N. sanctions ban the trade with North Korea of weapons and items that could be used for nuclear purposes, as well as luxury items. The U.S. also prohibits the import of North Korean-made goods into the United States.

Some conservatives in the United States have had harsh criticism of the Schmidt-Richardson trip.

Schmidt and Richardson "have joined the long list of Americans and others used by the Kim family dictatorship for political advantage," John Bolton, who served as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations during the George W. Bush administration, wrote in the New York Daily News.

"North Korea has repeatedly welcomed prominent Americans to help elevate its stature. It is seeking direct negotiations with Washington, for in the distorted vision of the nation's leadership, this might lead to full diplomatic recognition and 'equal' status in the world community."
