Rihanna 'Intimidated' By 'Battleship' Role

'I was walking into this as a complete amateur,' singer reveals in 'MTV First: Battleship.'

As Rihanna begins her foray into the film industry, she's quickly becoming the queen of pop culture. She's a musical icon with millions of fans who worship her singing abilities and can't wait to see her acting debut in Peter Berg's "Battleship." But her devotees aren't the only ones itching to see what the musician has up her sleeve. During her co-star said he was excited to see her take on the role.

"Yeah, there's an excitement behind [working with Rihanna]. I was excited to see what you were going to do with [the part]," Kitsch said to the singer.

Rihanna chimed in, "I'll answer this, because it's probably uncomfortable for them to say no, but I was the one that was intimidated."

Wait, what? It's hard to imagine the singer intimidated by anything. With songs like "Rockstar 101" and "Who's That Chick?" and equally fiery music videos, Rihanna gives off a fierce persona and owns any project that comes her way. But she revealed that despite her ever-present nerves, she learned from the cast — particularly Kitsch, who offered advice as they worked on scenes.

"You know, we have a mutual respect for each other's industry," she said. "I was walking into this as an amateur — a complete amateur. I didn't know anything and I had a good team to learn from. I watched them, and especially Taylor, 'cause we did a lot of scenes together and he would always offer me advice."

And as for Alexander Skarsgård, Brooklyn Decker and Kitsch having nerves around the successful chart-topper, Rihanna waves it off.

"There was nothing for them to be intimidated about. I was the wreck. I was a wreck, just like, scared to sh--," she said. "Especially when Liam Neeson showed up to set."

Let's see, Neeson has voiced an all-powerful lion for "Narnia," played Jean Valjean in "Les Misérables," was a Jedi Master in the "Star Wars" prequels and kicked some serious ass as he raced around Europe to save his daughter from sex trafficking in "Taken." Why would she ever be intimidated?

"He was intimidated by me," Rihanna joked.

Obesity affects job prospects for women, study finds

ScienceDaily (Apr. 30, 2012) ? Obese women are more likely to be discriminated against when applying for jobs and receive lower starting salaries than their non-overweight colleagues, a new study has found.

The study, led by The University of Manchester and Monash University, Melbourne, and published in the International Journal of Obesity, examined whether a recently developed measure of anti-fat prejudice, the universal measure of bias (UMB), predicted actual obesity job discrimination. The researchers also assessed whether people's insecurity with their own bodies (body image) and conservative personalities such as, authoritarianism, and social dominance orientation were related to obesity discrimination, as they are related to homophobia and racism.

Psychologist and lead researcher Dr Kerry O'Brien said the nature of the study was initially concealed from the participants to avoid biased results, and simply advertised as a study on whether some people are better at personnel selection than others.

"Participants viewed a series of resumes that had a small photo of the job applicant attached, and were asked to make ratings of the applicants suitability, starting salary, and employability," said Dr O'Brien. "We used pictures of women pre- and post-bariatric surgery, and varied whether participants saw either a resume, amongst many, that had a picture of an obese female (BMI 38-41) attached, or the same female but in a normal weight range (BMI 22-24) following bariatric surgery.

"We found that strong obesity discrimination was displayed across all job selection criteria, such as starting salary, leadership potential, and likelihood of selecting an obese candidate for the job."

The higher a participant's score on the measure of anti-fat prejudice, the more likely they were to discriminate against obese candidates, while those with a more authoritarian personality also displayed discrimination.

Dr O'Brien and co-authors Dr Janet Latner, from the University of Hawaii, and Dr Jackie Hunter, from Otago University, noted that one of the particularly interesting and new findings was that the participants' ratings of their own physical appearance (body image) and importance of physical appearance were also associated with obesity discrimination.

"The higher participants rated their own physical attractiveness and the importance of physical appearance, the greater the prejudice and discrimination," said Dr O'Brien. "One interpretation of this finding might be that we feel better about our own bodies if we compare ourselves and discriminate against 'fat' people, but we need to test this experimentally."

The study is the first to show a relationship between explicit self-report measures of obesity prejudice and obesity job discrimination. In addition, the results suggest that a belief in the superiority of some individuals over others is related to the perception that obese individuals deserve fewer privileges and opportunities than non-fat individuals.

Dr O'Brien added: "Our findings show that there is a clear need to address obesity discrimination, particularly against females who tend to bear the brunt of anti-fat prejudice. Prejudice reduction interventions and policies need to be developed. It's also becoming clear that the reasons for this prejudice appear to be related to our personalities, how we feel about ourselves, with attributions, such as, obese people are lazy, gluttonous etc merely acting as justifications for our prejudice."

Waka Flocka Flame Can't Accept Slim Dunkin's Death

'My dog ain't pass; I ain't accepting that,' Waka tells MTV News of his friend's December murder.

Despite the few months that have passed, it is still very difficult for Waka Flocka Flame to come to terms with the murder of his friendMario "Slim Dunkin" Hamilton.

"My dog ain't pass. I ain't accepting that," Waka told MTV News after a photo shoot in Brooklyn, New York, last week. "You know that sh-- is gonna carry with me, though, because he's me and I'm him. Together we're Brick Squad, man."

Dunkin, who was an emerging talent in Waka's Brick Squad Monopoly crew, was shot and killed December 16 after an argument in an Atlanta recording studio. The day after Dunkin's death, Waka expressed his grief via Twitter. "WISH IT WAS ME ... MY F---ING RIGHT HAND IS GONE," Flocka wrote.

The "O Let's Do It" MC continued to vent over Twitter, writing, "Damn I feel dead" and "IM LOST" in reaction to the tragic news.

Flocka dedicated his upcoming June album Triple F Life: Friends, Fans and Family to Dunkin. "What's behind my Triple F Life wave? The passing of my best friend Dunk. R.I.P. Dunk," he said. "That boy there was special. That boy there was different."

In March, Vinson "Young Vito" Hardimon, the rapper who police say shot Dunkin, was indicted on charges of murder, felony murder, aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony by a Georgia grand jury.

Before he passed, the rapper appeared alongside Waka on his 2010 debut album, Flockaveli, and on Gucci Mane and V-Nasty's BAYTL LP last year. On Halloween, he dropped Menace II Society, a 20-track mixtape that featured Gucci Mane, Roscoe Dash and Pastor Troy.

Study shows fewer loans to small business in March

NEW YORK (AP) ? Lending to small business is slowing, possibly a sign of deteriorating confidence in the economy from entrepreneurs.

A study released Tuesday by PayNet, a research firm that tracks loans to small business, shows that lending fell 3 percent in March.

The Thomson Reuters/PayNet Small Business Lending Index was at 98.5 in March, down from a revised 101.8 in February. The index was at 110.5 in December, when companies were rushing to acquire equipment before the expiration of lucrative tax deductions at the end of 2011. PayNet's analysis shows that lending is up 10 percent from a year ago, but it's also at the level where it was in 2005.

Many companies have been hesitant to borrow since the recession because they have been uncertain about the economy.
