Ghost drives family out of their home ? with tea pranks | The Sun ...

A FAMILY have told how they were driven out of their home by a poltergeist partial to a cuppa.

Frightened Rosaleen and George Doherty fled their council house last week after the spook repeatedly switched on the kettle and shook cups on their mug tree.

Mum of five Rosaleen, 47, said: ?It was like it was making tea for itself. It was terrifying.?

The Dohertys only moved into the house in June ? but within days the ghost was making its presence felt.

Rosaleen ? who now lives with her family in a caravan ? said: ?We?d hear it knock on the front door, then the lights would turn on in kitchen.?

She called a priest to perform an exorcism at the three-bed home in Airedale, West Yorks ? but it made matters worse. Rosaleen said: ?I felt it wanted us out.?

PFT: Sanchez benched, McElroy leads Jets' win

Indianapolis Colts v Detroit LionsGetty Images

Andrew Luck may be a rookie, but he runs a two-minute drill like a veteran.

Heck, he runs a two-minute drill like a Hall of Famer.

Luck led the Colts on a stunning comeback on Sunday in Detroit, taking a game that the Lions appeared to have in the bag and turning it into an amazing 35-33 come-from-behind win. Although the Lions? defensive line was drilling Luck all day, and the Lions appeared to have the game in hand when they took a 33-21 lead midway through the fourth quarter, Luck was simply amazing at the end of the game, and on the final play of the fourth quarter, he scrambled out of the pocket to avoid a sack and found Donnie Avery for a 14-yard touchdown.

Overall, Luck was 24-of-54 for 391 yards, with four touchdowns and three interceptions. For most of the game the Lions? defense played well against Luck (Ndamukong Suh was particularly tough, providing constant pressure), but in the end Luck showed his mettle.

It?s a near-certainty that the 8-4 Colts will earn one of the AFC?s two wild card berths. And if the 4-8 Lions had any playoff hopes remaining, those hopes can now be erased.

For the Lions, it?s disappointing to lose a game in which wide receiver Calvin Johnson had a career-high 13 catches, and his 171 yards put him on pace to break the NFL?s all-time single-season receiving yardage record, set by Jerry Rice in 1995. But that?s the kind of team the Lions have been this season: They have talented players, but that talent hasn?t added up to being a good team.

The Colts, on the other hand, are a playoff team. Everyone said Luck was the most NFL-ready passer to enter the NFL since his Indianapolis predecessor, Peyton Manning. It turns out that Luck is even better than advertised.

Suicide bombers attack U.S. base in Afghanistan

JALALABAD, Afghanistan (Reuters) - Suicide attackers detonated bombs and fired rockets outside a major U.S. base in Afghanistan on Sunday and police said 12 bodies were found near a gate, highlighting the country's security challenges ahead of the 2014 NATO combat troop pullout.

Local police officials said a dozen bodies in Afghan police and military uniforms were scattered around the entrance of the airfield in the eastern city of Jalalabad. A Taliban spokesman said the militant group had launched the 6 a.m. assault.

It was not clear whether the dead were Afghan security forces or militants dressed in uniforms, a tactic the Taliban sometimes deploy during attacks.

"There were multiple suicide bombers involved," said Major Martyn Crighton, a spokesman for the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF).

One member of the Afghan security forces was killed and several coalition troops were wounded, he said.

The United States and Afghan government are scrambling to stabilize Afghanistan before most NATO combat troops withdraw at the end of 2014 and hand over security to Afghan forces.

Afghanistan's defense ministry spokesman said there were rocket attacks at the base followed by two suicide bombings. He had no information on casualties.

In a text message, Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said : "This morning at 6 a.m. a number of our devotees attacked the major U.S. Base in Jalalabad city and so far have brought heavy casualties to the enemy."

In February, a suicide car bomber killed nine people at the base, almost exclusively used by NATO and the U.S. military.

U.S. chefs' solution for invading Frankenfish? Eat 'em

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The northern snakehead is known as "Frankenfish" and "rattlesnakes with fins," and some chefs say one way to stop the predatory, fast-spreading fish is obvious - with a fork.

With a reputation as fearsome as its name, the voracious snakehead fish has intruded throughout much of the Potomac River basin in Virginia and Maryland in the last decade, snapping up anything that gets in front of it.

Putting the torpedo-shaped snakehead on the menu is Washington-area restaurants' way of helping to control the Asian newcomer. Chefs said they have a key weapon on their side - humans' zest for eating up other species to the vanishing point.

"When man turns its attention to an animal, it's very difficult for the animal. He (the snakehead) is dangerous, but chefs are more dangerous," said David Stein, executive chef at Tony & Joe's Seafood Place in Washington.

He praised the snakehead for its dense, meaty, white flesh with a mild taste that is ideal for anything from grilling to sauteing. But given the name, snakehead ceviche might be going too far.

"The guy that orders that gets it for free," Stein said.

The northern snakehead, or Channa argus, has joined a tankful of invasive fish that U.S. authorities are urging people to control by eating them.

Lionfish in the Caribbean, Asian carp in the Mississippi River basin and blue catfish in Virginia rivers are among other newcomers that environmentalists want to see on a dinner plate.

SLAB-LIKE FLESH

But the snakehead stands out among its invasive peers because its slab-like flesh and its minimal shrinkage is seemingly ideal for white-tablecloth restaurants.

Some four restaurants in the Baltimore and Washington area serve it regularly, according to the Maryland Department of Natural Resources.

At Tony & Joe's, snakehead appetizers cost $10 to $11, and entrees about $26. Maryland is the only state with a commercial market and the limited supply is keeping prices high.

"They're really amazing. Probably if it was called any other name than snakehead, people would be more willing to give them a try," Stein said, admiring a 7-pound (3-kg) fish that had been killed by bow and arrow.

Snakeheads are hardy, fast-growing, voracious and prolific. They got their start in the Potomac through releases from aquariums and the live fish trade, and have turned up in such places as California and Florida. The name comes from its coarse scales, boa constrictor-like coloring and a reptilian snout with a mouth featuring dog-like teeth.

The fish are air breathers that can last for days out of water. Even when gutted and with their throats cut, they gape for breath, said John Rorapaugh, director of sustainability and sales at ProFish, a Washington wholesaler.

"Once they get to mature size, they are on top of the food chain and are ravenous," he said.

Mice, birds, frogs, other fish, and even AA batteries have turned up inside snakeheads, Rorapaugh said. The fish weigh from about 8 to 15 pounds when mature.

He said he pays about $5 a pound ($12.50 a kg) for snakehead, and has shipped some outside the Washington area, including to New York's upscale Gramercy Tavern.

Josh Newhard, an expert on the snakehead with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, said it was too early to say what the snakehead's long-term impact would be on its invaded environment.

Native species have shown no sign of decrease despite the fish's "remarkable" spread, he said.

"The potential is really high for them to impact other fish species. The fact that people want to remove them from the system is really good," he said.

USS Enterprise carrier taken out of active service

NORFOLK, Va. (AP) ? The world's first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier was retired from active service on Saturday, temporarily reducing the number of carriers in the U.S. fleet to 10 until 2015.

The USS Enterprise ended its notable 51-year career during a ceremony at its home port at Naval Station Norfolk, where thousands of former crew members, ship builders and their families lined a pier to bid farewell to one of the most decorated ships in the Navy.

"It'll be a special memory. The tour yesterday was a highlight of the last 20 years of my life. I've missed the Enterprise since every day I walked off of it," said Kirk McDonnell, a former interior communications electrician aboard the ship from 1983 to 1987 who now lives in Highmore, S.D.

The Enterprise was the largest ship in the world at the time it was built, earning the nickname "Big E." It didn't have to carry conventional fuel tanks for propulsion, allowing it to carry twice as much aircraft fuel and ordnance than conventional carriers at the time. Using nuclear reactors also allowed the ship to set speed records and stay out to sea during a deployment without ever having to refuel, one of the times ships are most vulnerable to attack.

"Nuclear propulsion changed everything," said Adm. John Richardson, director of Naval Reactors.

Every other aircraft carrier in the U.S. fleet is now nuclear powered, although they only have two nuclear reactors each compared to the Enterprise's eight. The Enterprise was the only carrier of its class ever built.

It was only designed to last 25 years, but underwent a series of upgrades to extend its life, making it the oldest active combat vessel in the fleet

The ship served in every major conflict since participating in a blockade during the Cuban Missile Crisis, helping earn its motto of "We are Legend."

Enterprise was headed back to Virginia following a regularly scheduled deployment when the Sept. 11 attacks happened. As soon as the ship's captain saw the attacks he turned around without orders to steam toward southwest Asia, where it later launched some of the first attacks against Afghanistan. The ship's captain was Adm. James A. Winnefeld, who now serves as the vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

It has been returning to that region of the world ever since then, including during its 25th and final deployment that ended last month.

"She just served on the cutting edge at the tip of the spear when she returned here in November," Chief of Naval Operations Jonathan Greenert said. "It's shown that the aircraft carrier can evolve as a platform with many payloads relevant for five decades and will be part of our national security for the foreseeable future as we bring on the Gerald Ford to replace the Enterprise."

The Gerald R. Ford will be the first of a new class of aircraft carriers, but it will be several more years before it joins the fleet. Temporarily reducing the number of aircraft carriers to 10 required special congressional approval. Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Jonathan Greenert said the Navy would closely watch how the increased operational tempo will affect sailors. In February, the USS Abraham Lincoln will begin a four-year refueling complex overhaul in Newport News, Va., which will also take it out of rotation.

Greenert said the Navy wants to continue having two aircraft carriers operating simultaneously in the Middle East through March, but he said he wasn't sure if that would continue past then.

While the Enterprise was inactivated Saturday, it will be several more years before it is fully decommissioned. Its nuclear fuel must first be removed by punching gigantic holes in the ship, rendering it unfit for service or turning it into a museum. It will eventually be towed to Washington state for scrapping.

The nuclear-powered aircraft carrier was the eighth U.S. ship to bear the name Enterprise, but it won't be the last. Navy Secretary Ray Mabus said in a video message that a future aircraft carrier would be named USS Enterprise, after the delivery of the USS Gerald R. Ford and the USS John F. Kennedy.

Mabus' announcement drew a standing ovation from those on hand at Saturday's ceremony. Current and former crew members have lobbied heavily to preserve Enterprise's name so its legacy will live on.

"It just seems to be a neat name for a ship. It's better than being named for a politician," said Larry Kosnopfal, one of the ship's original crew members, who now lives in Chadfield, Minn.

When the future USS Enterprise joins the fleet, its commanding officer will be handed a 200-pound time capsule filled with Enterprise memorabilia that includes notes from sailors, insignia and small pieces of the ship. The time capsule was delivered to Greenert for safekeeping until that future commanding officer is chosen.
