Cyber Monday likely to be busiest online sales day

(AP) ? Black Friday is a distant memory. Small Business Saturday is long gone. Now, it's Cyber Monday's turn.

Cyber Monday, coined in 2005 by a shopping trade group that noticed a spike in online sales on the Monday after Thanksgiving when people returned to their work computers, is the next in a line of days that stores are counting on to jumpstart the holiday shopping season.

This year's Cyber Monday is expected to be the biggest online shopping day of the year for the third year in a row: According to research firm comScore, Americans are expected to spend $1.5 billion, up from $1.25 billion last year on Cyber Monday, as retailers ramp up deals to get shoppers to click on their websites.

Amazon.com, which is starting its Cyber Monday deals at midnight on Monday, is offering as much as 60 percent off a Panasonic VIERA 55-inch TV that's usually priced higher than $1,000. Sears is offering $430 off a Maytag washer and dryer, each on sale for $399. And Kmart is offering 75 percent off diamond earrings and $60 off a 12-in-1 multigame table on sale for $89.99.

Retailers are hoping the deals will appeal to shoppers like Matt Sexton, 39, who for the first time plans to complete all his holiday shopping online this year on his iPad tablet computer. Sexton, who plans to spend up to $4,000 this season, already shopped online on the day after Thanksgiving known as Black Friday and found a laptop from Best Buy for $399, a $200 savings, among other deals.

"The descriptions and reviews are so much better online so you can compare and price shop and for the most part get free shipping," said Sexton, who lives in Queens, N.Y., and is a manager at a utility company.

Sexton also said it's easy to return an online purchase to a physical store than it had been in previous years. "That helps with gifts," he said.

How well retailers do on Cyber Monday will offer insight into Americans' evolving shopping habits. With the growth in high speed Internet access and the wide and increasing use of smartphones and tablet computers, people are relying less on their work computers to shop than they did when Shop.org, the digital division of trade group The National Retail Federation, coined the term "Cyber Monday."

As a result, the period between Thanksgiving and Cyber Monday has have become busy for online shopping as well. Indeed, IBM Benchmark, which tracks online sales, said on Thanksgiving, a day that historically had not been big for online shopping, online sales this year rose 17.4 percent over 2011. Of that, mobile shopping, or shopping on smartphones and tablets, rose 18.3 percent. Meanwhile, online sales on Black Friday were up 20.7 percent.

For the overall holiday season, comScore predicts online sales will be up 17 percent to $43.4 billion. And the research firm expects online sales to surpass 10 percent of total retail spending this holiday season. The National Retail Federation estimates that overall retail sales in November and December will be up 4.1 percent this year to $586.1 billion

"People years ago didn't have the kind of connectivity to shop online at their homes. So when they went back to work after Thanksgiving they'd shop on the Monday after," said Vicki Cantrell, executive director of Shop.org. "Now they don't need the work computer to be able to do that."

But as other days become popular for online shopping, Cyber Monday may lose some of its cache. To be sure, Cyber Monday hasn't always been the biggest online shopping day. In fact, up until three years ago, that title was historically held on the last day shoppers can order items with standard shipping rates and get them delivered before Christmas. That day usually falls in late December.

Even though Cyber Monday is expected to be the biggest shopping day this year, industry watchers say it could just be a matter of time before other days take that ranking.

"Of all the benchmark spending days, Thanksgiving is growing at the fastest rate, up 128 percent over the last five years," said Andrew Lipsman, a spokesman with comScore.

Detecting Cancer...With a Cellphone?

Smartphone technology is often seen as much of nuisance as it is a convenience, but having that kind of communicative power at our fingertips has a surprising advantage; it?s serving as a bridge, bringing ?healthcare to third world countries that had previously been too remote and too costly to reach.

The Kilimanjaro Cervical Screening Project is spearheading one use of smartphone technology in a way that?s surprisingly simple, but could end up saving thousands of women's lives.

Armed with screening kits, treatment tools and cellphones, teams of non-physician medical workers will visit remote locations in rural Tanzania to screen women for cervical cancer. Instead of the swab method used in the typical Pap smear, workers will use their cellphones to photograph a patient?s cervix, text the image to a physician and then receive back a diagnosis and treatment recommendation.

But can it really be that simple? Dr. Karen Yeates?of Queen's University, who is the lead investigator of the project, told CNN, "That's the beauty of it -- for early grade cancers, those will be able to be treated right in the field, right in the rural area.?

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), rates of cervical cancer in Africa are up to ten times those in developed countries, and among those diagnosed, about?50,000 women die from it annually.

Though cervical cancer has very low mortality rates in developed countries like the U.S., that's generally due to regular screenings which catch the disease in its earliest and most treatable incarnations.?However, in countries like Tanzania, women in remote villages obviously don't have access to those types of preventative measures. Subsequently, the WHO estimates that by the time most African women are diagnosed with the disease, they?ve already advanced into its latest fatal stages. But regular screenings could put a stop to that.?

In addition to addressing reproductive healthcare, cellphones are as of late becoming facilitators of cardiac care in developing countries as well. Earlier this year, high school student?Catherine Wong discovered how to turn her cellphone into a portable ECG machine, bringing heart monitoring capabilities to the most remote locations with results that could be beamed to doctors no matter how far away.

The Kilimanjaro Cervical Screening Project is gaining some notoriety because it's recently become one of the 68 finalists in Canada?s Grand Challenges, a fund awarded to medical innovators who?ve invented new systems or products to bring healthcare to the poorest parts of the world. As a finalist, the Kilimanjaro Project has been granted $100,000, allowing it to begin its initial trials.

So much of good healthcare rests on the early detection of illness and now that geography and cost aren't the impediments they once were, patients in developing countries have real opportunities to survive illnesses once believed to be fatal.?

Do you expect that "mobile healthcare" may eventually become the standard method of care in countries like the U.S. as well? Let us know what you think about it in the Comments.

South Africa: Police kill 7 suspected robbers

JOHANNESBURG (AP) ? Police in South Africa say they shot dead seven suspected robbers and wounded nine others in a botched theft at an armored car company.

Capt. Paul Ramaloko of the South African Police Service said Sunday that officers got a tip that the thieves wanted to rob a Protea Coin depot in Robertville, a suburb west of Johannesburg.

A gunfight began Saturday night as officers tried to arrest the suspects. Ramaloko says no officers were injured in the shooting. He said they recovered firearms from the suspected robbers at the depot.

Violent crime remains common in South Africa, as unemployment remains high and options few for the nation's poor. Mass police shootings often occur as officers confront heavily armed criminal gangs.

Low oil price a risk for LNG projects: experts

Australia's liquified natural gas projects are more vulnerable to a lower oil price than to competition from the US, Canada or Mozambique, energy experts say.

Dr Fereidun Fesharaki, chairman of Singapore-based consultants FACTS Global Energy, forecast that oil prices would remain around $US80-90 a barrel for the second half of this decade - significantly lower than the $US125 a barrel forecast by the International Energy Agency, which he described as "way too high".

US West Texas Intermediate crude oil prices are currently around $US87 a barrel and Brent is trading at $US109 a barrel.

At high oil prices, Dr Fesharaki said, "everything works" for LNG developers. But persistently lower oil prices would "'separate the boys from the men".

At an oil price around $US80-90 a barrel, it did not make much difference whether Asia's LNG markets retained oil-linked pricing or moved to hub-based pricing as in the US, he said.

Dr Fesharaki said Cheniere's Sabine Pass LNG contract with Kogas was struck at 115 per cent of the Henry Hub price in the US, plus a margin of $US3 for liquefaction and $US3.50 for shipping via the Panama canal. He said Henry Hub gas prices would drift upwards from the current level of $US3.50 per mmbtu to $US5 per mmbtu, meaning US LNG would sell in Asia at about $US12 per mmbtu.

New US LNG export contracts would be struck at 135 per cent of the Henry Hub price plus a margin of $US7.50 per mmbtu which translated into an Asian price of $US14/mmbtu - which is comparable to the price for Australian gas.

"It is a mistake to worry about the potential supplies from the US being a threat to Australia," he said.

But lower oil prices would put margin pressure on Australia's LNG suppliers who sell into Asian oil-linked markets. Australia should aim to supply LNG to Asia at $US12/mmbtu - which he described as "the twelve dollar rule".

"The competition will be cost control," Dr Fesharaki said. "The cost explosion in Australia is ... quite remarkable". Referring to lasst week's $US3 billion cost blowout at the Exxon Mobil-led PNG LNG project, Dr Fesharaki said: "We thought PNG was immune, but it's not".

He predicted the US would export around 40-50 million tonnes per annum of LNG, ramping up from 2019-22.

Earlier, Santos chief executive David Knox told the conference he expected US gas companies would be allowed to export 30-40 million tonnes per annum of LNG, which would comprise less than 10 per cent of the global market.

Over the long term, Mr Knox said, US exports would be "at the margin".

Rio Tinto's general manager energy industry analysis, Stephen Wilson, said there was huge uncertainty about the outlook for gas. On one school of thought, the global market was on the verge of radical change, driven by the US shale gas revolution, which would push markets towards a single world gas price, no longer tied to the oil price.

Dr Fesharaki said Canadian LNG exports would be more expensive than US exports, and would take longer to develop.

Mozambique gas reserves were big, he said, but "it is not going to be cheap".

But Dr Fesharaki said there would be "a breather" before the next round of LNG projects were approved.

Drones: A Controversial Eye in the Sky for Property Managers

Drones: A Controversial Eye in the Sky for Property Managers

by Trevor Henson | on

property-management-drones-real-estateAn act was passed in February that?s ultimately going to open new doors of opportunity for real estate and property management officials. The FAA Air Transportation Modernization and Safety Improvement Act requires that the FAA ?accept and support? drones?or Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs)?in United States airways.

While awaiting the new stipulations to be defined and take effect (by September 2015), many industries are taking a look at how UAVs can support their business ventures.

And professionals in both property management and real estate businesses have determined several ways drones could be of use.

For example:

-Satellite imagery and data collection

-Aerial photography, without the expense of manned aircraft

-Property surveillance and maintenance oversight

There are, however, also concerns surrounding laws allowing UAVs in our airspace. Property owners and tenants, for instance, have expressed concerns about privacy violation.

There are slews of opinions on both sides of the drone controversy. And, until the new laws are defined and released, the future of UAVs is still a bit blurry. What?s your opinion as a real estate professional?

Have a great Thanksgiving!? -Trevor
