Process could save time and money for oil/gas industry

FEBRUARY 2012 -- A University of Toronto research team has developed a process to analyze the behavior of bitumen in reservoirs using a microfluidic chip, a tool commonly associated with the field of medical diagnostics. The process may reduce the cost and time of analyzing bitumen-gas interaction in heavy oil and bitumen reservoirs.

Dr. David Sinton, Professor with the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering at the University of Toronto, and postdoctoral researcher Dr. Hossein Fadaei are using the chips to examine the way highly pressurized CO2 behaves when injected into bitumen. The new method, reported in the journal Energy & Fuels, could streamline the way fossil energy companies measure the diffusion of gases in heavier oils like bitumen.

"To my knowledge, this is the first application of microfluidics in the study of gas-bitumen diffusion," says Sinton. His project was funded in part by Carbon Management Canada, a national Networks of Centres of Excellence funding research to reduce CO2 emissions in the fossil energy industry and other large-scale emitters.

Bitumen and heavy oil are difficult to extract from reservoirs because they are thick and do not flow easily. There are several methods of extraction, one of which uses CO2-rich gas injections which helps liquify the bitumen for easier extraction. This process can supplement the steam-injection method which requires heavy inputs of energy and water, and it presents opportunities for sequestration of CO2 in the reservoir.

But, says Sinton, before companies pump CO2 into reservoirs they need to first determine how the CO2 and oil will behave under specific pressures and in specific rock formations. Conventional methods of analysis are conducted using about .5 L of bitumen and a process that can take hours or even days for a single test result.

Sinton and his colleagues use a small glass microchip to replicate a pore within a rock reservoir. The channels in the pore are 50 microns wide, or about half the diameter of a human hair. The device is initially filled with CO2 at low pressure and a small sample of bitumen is injected into the centre of the chip. High pressure CO2 is then injected at both ends of the chip and the swelling of the oil is measured over time.

"This takes 10 minutes and uses a nanoliter plug of sample. If you can do a test in a few minutes and perform many tests in parallel, that's a lot cheaper," he points out. "The experimental setup is also quite simple compared to existing methods."

The method developed by Sinton shows potential as a rapid, reliable approach that could be used by both researchers and the oil and gas industry. And because it uses such small samples, the method could also be employed using hazardous solvents.

Next steps involve studying many types of oil or combinations of diffusion gases at one time in one chip; expanding temperature and pressure ranges of tests to match the variety of conditions found down-hole and in bitumen processing, and adapting the method to work with less viscous oils and other fluids such as brine. Diffusion of CO2 into brine at high pressures is of particular interest for carbon sequestration applications.

(AP) ? The Japanese government withheld information about the full danger of last year's nuclear disaster from its own people and from the United States, putting U.S.-Japan relations at risk in the first days after the accident, according to an independent report released Tuesday.

The report, compiled from interviews with more than 300 people, delivers a scathing view of how leaders played down the risks of the meltdowns at the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear plant that followed a massive March 11 earthquake and tsunami.

The report by the private Rebuild Japan Initiative Foundation also paints a picture of confusion during the days immediately after the accident. It says the U.S. government was frustrated by the scattered information provided by Japan and was skeptical whether it was true.

The U.S. advised Americans to leave an area within 50 miles (80 kilometers) of the plant, far bigger than the 12-mile (20-kilometer) Japanese evacuation area, because of concerns that the accident was worse than Japan was reporting.

The misunderstandings were gradually cleared up after a bilateral committee was set up on March 22 and began regular meetings, according to the 400-page report.

The report, compiled by scholars, lawyers and other experts, credits then-Prime Minister Naoto Kan for ordering Tokyo Electric Power Co., the utility running the plant, not to withdraw its staff and to keep fighting to bring it under control.

TEPCO's president at the time, Masataka Shimizu, called Kan on March 15 and said he wanted to abandon the plant and have all 600 TEPCO staff flee, the report said. That would have allowed the situation to spiral out of control, resulting in a much larger release of radiation.

A group of about 50 workers was eventually able to bring the plant under control.

TEPCO, which declined to take part in the investigation, has denied it planned to abandon Fukushima Dai-ichi. The report notes the denial, but says Kan and other officials had the clear understanding that TEPCO had asked to leave.

But the report criticizes Kan for attempting to micromanage the disaster and for not releasing critical information on radiation leaks, thereby creating widespread distrust of the authorities among Japanese.

Kan's office did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the report.

Kan acknowledged in a recent interview with The Associated Press that the release of information was sometimes slow and at times wrong. He blamed a lack of reliable data at the time and denied the government hid such information from the public.

It will take decades to fully decommission Fukushima Dai-ichi. Although one of the damaged reactor buildings has been repaired, others remain in shambles. A group of journalists, including a reporter from The Associated Press, were given a tour of the plant on Tuesday.

Workers have used tape to mend cracks caused by freezing weather in plastic hoses on temporary equipment installed to cool the hobbled reactors.

"I have to acknowledge that they are still rather fragile," plant chief Takeshi Takahashi said of the safety measures.

The area is still contaminated with radiation, complicating the work. It already has involved hundreds of thousands of workers, who have to quit when they reach the maximum allowed radiation exposure of 100 millisieverts a year.

The report includes a document describing a worst-case scenario that Kan and the chief of the Japan Atomic Energy Commission secretly discussed two weeks after the disaster.

That scenario involved the possibility of more nuclear fuel rods burning, causing the release of more radiation and requiring the evacuation of a much wider region, including Tokyo.

The report also concludes that government oversight of nuclear plant safety had been inadequate, ignoring the risk of tsunami and the need for plant design renovations, and instead clinging to a "myth of safety."

"The idea of upgrading a plant was taboo," said Koichi Kitazawa, a scholar who heads the commission that prepared the report. "We were just lucky that Japan was able to avoid the worst-case scenario. But there is no guarantee this kind of luck will prevail next time."

Mobile World Congress: Best of day one

The year's largest display of up-and-coming mobile phones, Mobile World Congress, has gotten off to a good start ? especially for Android. Check out a list of our favorites from day one of the conference.

Mobile World Congress, one of the largest gatherings of phone makers, is always full of good surprises. And this year?s show is no exception. Already during the first day of the conference in Barcelona, big-time manufacturers from Sony to Samsung have showcased new Android phones aplenty ? one of which actually has a built-in projector. Here are three of the most appealing phones from the show so far.

Samsung Galaxy Beam

Just as the name suggests, Samsung?s latest Android phone serves as a mini-projector, displaying ?anything on its screen in 640 by 360-pixel resolution. (We?re already imagining life-size Temple Run projected onto a wall.) The Galaxy Beam is a littler thinker than a normal phone, but remains less than half an inch thick. Samsung says the phone can project for about three hours straight on a single charge, and judging by CNET photos, projections are bright and clear. Initially, the idea of a projector brings back memories of elementary school science class ? but in reality, it?s one of the great untapped technologies of mobile phones. If it delivers, the Beam will be able to cut out the many cords and frustrations that come with linking up computers/phones to televisions and other screens. Good for business presentations, great for playing games and video.

HTC One X

This is the Incredible Hulk of Mobile World Congress so far. It?ll have a Tegra 3 quad-core 1.5 GHz processor, for extra zippy speeds. But don?t get too excited. The American version of the One X swaps out the quad-core for a SnapDragon S4, but throws in a 4G LTE antenna for a faster Internet connection. Both editions come with a ton of attractive features ? a 4.7-inch, 1280 by 720 HD screen and a camera capable of shooting a photo every 0.7 seconds. It also runs on the latest Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. Plus, it?s pretty sleek.

HTC also announced the HTC One V, a decidedly less enchanting phone than the X, but it?ll probably be more affordable. The One V has a 3.7-inch, 800 by 480 pixel screen and runs on Android 4.0. We?d equate it to the iPhone 4 ? not quite the 4S, but still good.

Sony Xperia U

Hey, it?s definitely not the next powerhouse phone. But it?s not pretending to be, either. Sony?s Xperia U is one of the latest smart phones that?s aiming for an audience unwilling to shell out a ton of cash. Its 3.5-inch screen makes it easy to hold, and its 5-megapixel camera is less than, say, an iPhone 4S 8-megapixel camera, but that comes with the territory. Still, it looks like the Xperia U has some cool music features, such as surround sound and wireless streaming to speakers. Now, that?s a perk.

As MWC continues, we?ve still got a few hopefuls to look out for ? Windows 8 phones, please! ? but progress is steady thus far. Some phones will join a long list of others in anonymity (who remembers the HTC ChaCha last year?), but we?re hoping at least a few will go the distance.

Gilbert Bankruptcy Lawyers Provide Assistance With Your Financial ...

Probably one of the scariest words you?d ever want to hear when dealing with your finances is bankruptcy. Seen by some people as the nuclear option of economics, it?s a scary idea. The information on bankruptcy given to us is either a portrayal of our inability to ever get credit again or as a means to get out of debt whenever we feel we are at the end of the rope. The truth is somewhere in the middle of the road, and if you?re going to declare bankruptcy in Arizona you might want to seek out the aid ofGilbert bankruptcy lawyers.

Bankruptcy is a legal process, first of all. Chiefly, you are giving the opportunity for you and your creditors to be able to work out your differences in court. The implication is that each case is different depending on the income of the debtor, the amount that is owed, the bankruptcy applicant?s credit, among other things. And in the same way that someone accused of murder would be crazy to go into court with no experience and defending themselves so too you?d be at a severe disadvantage stepping into bankruptcy court withouta bankruptcy lawyer at your side.

Bankruptcy lawyers have the background that they would use to help you understand the jargon of the legal process giving you the inside scoop. With all the paperwork involved and the occurrences in the courtroom, people with no experiences on the legal side of the case would have a hard time pursuing it. When it comes to dealing with your bankruptcy case, a good attorney will ensure that you are placed in the most beneficial position possible from the streamlining they did on your case.

It is important that you are sure filing for Arizona bankruptcy is the angle you want to pursue regarding your financial situation. Before actually filing for bankruptcy, you might need to speak with an attorney to check whether you have the necessary documents and evidence required to pursue one. There is an accompanying black mark against your credit score that would make it difficult for you in the future to get credit. Your lawyer will give you the appropriate advice for your circumstances and would suggest you take other options if bankruptcy is not for you.

'Bridesmaids' Cast Talk 'Wieners,' Play Drinking Game At Oscars

Oscar nominee Melissa McCarthy joins castmates onstage to bring laughs at Academy Awards.

There were several LOL moments during the 2012 Academy Awards, and one of those moments came courtesy of the funny women from "Bridesmaids." The six stars of the box-office smash took the stage on Sunday night (February 26) to hand out a bunch of awards. They not only passed out Oscar gold, they also dished out some good-natured, albeit somewhat NSFW, laughs.

Maya Rudolph and Kristen Wiig were first at bat to present Short Film (Live Action) to "The Shore."

"Six beautiful, some say handsome, women were invited by the Academy not only to present three awards, but also to shatter the common belief that size does not matter," Wiig joked. "Ah, I hate to tell you guys this, but it kind of does," she further teased, likening the length of a movie to that of a certain part of a male's anatomy.

"Yes, but not length," Rudolph added. "As my grandma used to say, 'It can be short and still make your toes curl.' And I believe in my heart my grandma wasn't referring to wieners but short films."

The joke continued, with Wiig adding, "See, I'd rather have a short film with some heft that's nice to me rather than a long film that lies there and makes you do all the work."

"But sometimes a film can be too long," Rudolf said, while Wiig, holding back laughter, added, "Not for me, not for me."

With Rudolf and Wiig's joke about "wieners" over, Rose Byrne and Oscar nominee Melissa McCarthy picked up where they left off at the SAG Awards, playing their Scorsese drinking game. "Documentaries shine spotlight on the world around us," Byrne said.

"And in the case of the best documentary short subject, that line shines for only a short period of time, much like a moonbeam or shooting star or a flicker of a candle," McCarthy added during their poetic introduction, before someone shouted "Scorsese" and the ladies swilled liquor and handed the Documentary Short Subject award to "Saving Face."

The fun didn't end there. Ellie Kemper and Wendi McLendon-Covey topped off the comical interlude. "And last but not least, we've come to Best Animated Short film," McLendon-Covey said. "In 1988, this award was presented to the great John Lasseter, who has since gone on to change the world of animation when he helped create Pixar." Kemper then joked, "Yes, so technically every nominee in this category has been given the opportunity to live up to those standards, but no pressure, of course."

That pressure was handed off to "The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore" when it took home the 2012 Oscar.

Iran: Attack will lead to Israel's collapse

(AP) ? Iran's defense minister warned that an Israeli attack on Iran will lead to the collapse of the Jewish state, state-run television reported Saturday, in one of the strongest statements from Iran indicating it would punish Israel should it attack Iran's nuclear facilities.

The comments by Gen. Ahmad Vahidi on Press TV come as Israel has recently stepped up its verbal threats that it may attack Iran's nuclear facilities. The U.S., Israel and many in the West fear that Iran is trying to build nuclear weapons while Iran insists its nuclear program is strictly for peaceful purposes such as producing energy.

Israel has pointedly not ruled out a military strike designed to cripple Iran's nuclear program, something Vahidi warned against Saturday.

"A military attack by the Zionist regime (against Iran) will undoubtedly lead to the collapse of this regime," he was quoted as saying. The defense minister did not say what type of action Iran would take in such a scenario.

Israeli officials say Israel must act by the summer if it wants to effectively halt Iran's program because Tehran is moving more of its nuclear installations deep underground.

Iran has spread its nuclear facilities across the vast country and has built key portions underground to protect them from possible airstrikes.

Israel views Iran as an existential threat, citing frequent calls by President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad for Israel's destruction, Iran's support for violent anti-Israel militant groups and its long range missile program.

Israel has shown in the past that it is willing to take unilateral action if it feels justified. In 1981, the Israeli air force destroyed an unfinished Iraqi nuclear reactor. And in 2007, Israeli warplanes are believed to have destroyed a target that foreign experts think was an unfinished nuclear reactor in Syria.

Iran has warned in the past that Tehran would respond to an attack against it by barraging Israel with missiles. It could also use its proxies Hezbollah and Hamas to launch rockets into the Jewish state, and cause global oil prices to spike by striking targets in the Gulf.

Iran's arsenal already boasts missiles with a range of about 1,250 miles (2,000 kilometers) that were specifically designed for Israel and U.S. targets. The two missiles in Iran's possession that have such a range are the Shahab-3 and the Sajjil.

Iran's military leaders say the Persian state possesses technology to manufacture missiles with a range greater than 1,250 miles, but it doesn't feel the need to do so.

The Revolutionary Guard, Iran's most powerful military force which is in charge of Iran's missile program, unveiled underground smart missile silos last year, claiming that medium- and long-range missiles stored in them are ready to launch if Iran was attacked.

The silos are widely viewed as a strategic asset for Iran in the event of a U.S. or Israeli strike on its nuclear facilities because it greatly reduces the time for Iran to respond to strikes.

Modern Music Lessons, Not Your Parents Lessons | Articles 4 Net Blog

By Adrianna Noton

One of the most popular recreational activities to take up for people of all ages is music. It?s fun, it?s engaging, and after putting in the work there?s hardly anything as rewarding as sharing the gift of music with friends and family. Even if you?re introverted and you play only for your own ears, music is its own reward. But at least in the past generation music lessons have changed in some considerable ways, and they aren?t quite what they used to be.

Old-fashioned music lessons evoke the image of an unwilling pupil forced to play complicated classical music by rote. While you can still find traditional teachers, and for some students who fit this mould it?s perfectly appropriate, many teachers cater towards a different kind of student. Most students now are looking to play popular music they already know, and they?re satisfied playing songs as opposed to learning heaps of music theory they won?t really apply. The best thing is to meet somewhere in the middle: while you don?t want to ram anything down the throat of an unwilling student, there?s something to be said for understanding rudimentary elements of music. This can be done in engaging ways, and not all at once.

A good teacher balances the needs and wants of the student so that they don?t ever feel like they?re struggling through a boring element of music that doesn?t appeal to them. This requires a rapport based on trust, and even humour, and it takes time to develop. While instilling the desire to learn about music is key, the most essential thing is to engage the student in the music itself and make sure they?re playing. This is the prime directive, so the extent you can push for more traditional demands depends on their determination and their inclination, but all good music teachers have a good sense of how to do this. This is the art of teaching music.

The first responsibility is to transfer the love of music. When the student wants to play, they?ll overcome whatever obstacles there are. It?s essential to foster their desire to improve. This means that the beginning of music lessons is characterized by a series of small accomplishments that are within reach of the novice, but not so small that they don?t feel significant when they?re reached. Favourite songs can be learned, but easier versions which still carry the essential flavour of the song. All the while the teacher inspects the hands to ensure all fingering is correct, and explains along why certain techniques are useful.

But perhaps the best thing about music lessons is the relationship you form with a figure that becomes a friend, a mentor, and hopefully a source of inspiration. You want to emulate their ability and you?re grateful to be on friendly, approachable terms with someone whose skills you admire. Workshop Houston ? Study Hard Music Video

This series of articles will show the piano student what is needed to acquire that which is necessary in piano playing, namely, a good tone-production.

It is necessary for the piano student to observe, and learn fully and precisely, as much of the mechanism of the piano as possible. It is only with careful study that a scientific knowledge of piano-touch can be attained. No piano student, however musically gifted they may be, can, in these days of "higher development," afford to depend solely on the aesthetic side of his nature for the cultivation of his technique.

If the technical study of the piano is approached in a spirit of calm inquiry, there is no reason why a study of the piano should not brace the mental system of the student, and do him as much good as would a careful study of grammar or geometry. And although this technical study is not sufficient of itself to make an artist, still the benefit derived from it will be always at hand to help the piano student unravel many difficulties which otherwise could cause a great deal of frustration, and would slow the learners progress.

Of all musical instruments, the piano is perhaps the one, which a player can, quite easily misuse. The pianist has an almost unlimited freedom of movement for the body, arms, and hands; and the instrument imposes few conditions to its use. Therefore, it is necessary for the student to have a knowledge
(1) of the correct use of his limbs,
(2) of how to use correctly the mechanism peculiar to the piano, and
(3) of how to adapt the one exactly to the other, before he can acquire an unexaggerated style of playing.

It is unfortunately a commonly accepted idea that the piano, like the organ, is dependent for its quality of tone on the manufacturer alone, and that "Broadwood" or "Bechstein," as the case may be, is wholly responsible for the kind of sound, which the player produces. And parallel with this opinion runs the generally accepted one that touch, or, the method of producing correct tone, cannot be taught, and is entirely a "gift."

When a great pianist plays, there is a beauty, delicacy, and richness of tone in what the piano player produces. This is usually thought to piano players touch being born with the player. Or to the fact that his fingers have been for so many years never off the keys, or to his large hands, or long fingers. Or to some other qualification possessed only by pianists of similar rank, and quite out of the reach of less gifted players.

In examining the question of how one may learn to produce good tone, the following fact should offer a foundation for observation and reasoning, that is to say, that both the great artist and the poor player have one common field of action in the external mechanism of the piano, that is, its Keyboard.

The great artist and the poor player may both be seen at work, and notes may therefore be taken of their different methods of using the means given them for the production of tone. The hands of both obey the same primary laws of muscular movement and the piano, is a keyboard instrument that will reproduce accurately what is being played on it, good or bad, and no respecter of who is playing. It is simply the acted-upon, and not the agent.

When therefore the great artist is seen to use his hands differently from the poor player. The reason of the different character of the tone must partly be that the method of touching the instrument is different. Part of the reason lies, of course, in the fact, that the great player starts with a greater degree of musical talent than the poor player does.

But as this article discusses not so much musical feeling itself, but rather the expressing of musical feeling, and as it is very evident that the great piano player does use the hand differently from the poor piano player.

Arrival of 4th Generation Wireless Technology and its effects on ...

Article by Vijay Kaul

Overall Effects- People?s Lifestyles and Mobile Communications

The 4th Generation (4G) mobile communications systems are projected to be carried out around 2010. World Over the research on 4G (Fourth Generation) Mobile Communications is in progress since the last 6 years. The technology is still in evolution but Countries have already started committing themselves to its implementation. India has said that it would leapfrog from 2G to 4G bypassing the 3G Technology. China, Korea and Japan are jointly developing 4G Phones; China will implement 4G technology for the Beijing Olympic games. WiMax Technology is on its last legs because it does not support VOIP. Data transfers will happen at LAN Speeds of 100Mbps.The World is looking up to 4G for transformation of the way people do day-to-day business. Once the technology evolves the hand phone used in 4G mobile communications would be an all in one device for use in.

? Network games and music/video content downloading
? Visual Communication
? Merchandise purchase and settlement
? Daily Life
? Work
? Nursing and Health Care
? Emergency Medical Treatment
? Disaster Management.

People?s Lifestyles and Mobile Communications

The 4G Mobile Communication Systems can have even greater impact on people?s lives, leading to changes in lifestyles and transforming our living environments, way of business and the social system. 4G mobile systems are likely to widely and deeply penetrate our daily lives, to create a new information and communications environment in our society. The use of mobile communications services will be taken for granted in the daily lives of people, and their behavior may be significantly change from the conventional behavioral patterns., It will enable people to study literally, play, work, and shop anywhere they want. As a consequence, people will be liberated from the limitations and restrictions of space, and be able to more freely choose where they want to be schools, offices and homes will not disappear as a physical space, but the significance of ?place? and ?space? could be much different from our conventional thinking, a great transformation of business structure, particularly in industries targeted at consumers, and an emergence of new businesses. service offering may shift in varying degrees into a structure where ?a service is delivered to the user? instead of ?users are required to go out to receive service?. Mobile government services and remote education is likely to be provided purely as an application on mobile networks. Although it may be difficult to realize full-scale on-line medical service right away, an environment where doctors with advanced mobile medical devices visit patient?s homes to provide treatment using special mobile services are considered sufficiently possible. The advancement in mobile services are likely to enlarge the markets for a wide range of products that are often used in daily life, including mobile terminals, information appliances, home network, intelligent vehicles, etc

It may not be too much to say that the service that has most dramatically transformed people?s lifestyles in the last decade is mobile communications such as cellular phones and PHS. Ten years ago, cellular phones were still too expensive and too bulky to carry around, thus, they were used only by limited amount of business users and others. After the explosive growth in the late 1990?s, however, mobile communications have turned into the most frequently used means for communications for many users. Furthermore, with the creation of e-mail, content services, i.e., ringing tones and games, and other applications such as web information services for cellular phones, mobile communications have provided a lot of fun and conveniences to people?s daily lives, and even caused some changes in the power balance between various information medium.

In the next ten years, mobile communications services are expected to make further progress and cast an even greater impact on people?s lives, leading to changes in lifestyles and transforming our living environments, way of business and the social system.

Due to the advancement of mobile services, 4G mobile systems are expected to be much more widely used in and closely related to our daily lives than today. For instance, through the six use of mobile terminals equipped with full-scale settlement capabilities, people would be able to use mobile devices as a secure electronic settlement means for the purchases they make from shops or vending machines in town. If a solid personnel authentication becomes a reality through biological authentication technologies, people may be able to gain access a variety of services including administrative services of local governments from their mobile terminals at hand. A significant enhancement in data transmission rates will allow users to obtain and enjoy video software and advanced game contents, etc., in an instant regardless of their location.

Transactions of business mail with a huge data attachment can be performed without any stress in mobile environments, which may make the word ?desk-work? obsolete. People will be able to receive necessary navigation information in a simple manner whenever they go out, and may no longer feel inconvenient due to a lack of information. In addition, if abnormalities, such as an accident or a natural disaster, people will be able to make necessary contacts immediately from virtually anywhere, improving the safety standard of our lives.

As described above, 4G mobile systems are likely to widely and deeply penetrate our daily lives, to create a new information and communications environment in our society. The use of mobile communications services will be taken for granted in the daily lives of people, and their behavior may be significantly change from the conventional behavioral patterns.

Traditionally, people used several life spaces of different functionality or significance (home, school, workplace, bank, department stores, hospitals, to name a few) for specific purposes. Mobile services, however, can provide many of these functionalities transcending spaces. In other words, it enables people to study literally, play, work, and shop anywhere they want. As a consequence, people will be liberated from the limitations and restrictions of space, and be able to more freely choose where they want to be.

This is a transformation from a ?space-based lifestyle? with many restrictions to a freer and more flexible ?object-oriented lifestyle?. Naturally, schools, offices and homes will not disappear as a physical space, but the significance of ?place? and ?space? could be much different from our conventional thinking.

Why Fighting Addiction Can Feel Like a Game of Whac-a-Mole ...

I remember driving past a church one evening with a colleague. A large group of people stood out front, shrouded in an impressive cloud of cigarette smoke. ?AA meeting,? my colleague remarked. He didn?t actually know this for a fact, but this is one of those iconic images of recovering alcoholics: coffee cup clutched in one hand, cigarette in the other.

Treatment programs don?t usually address nicotine addiction; they say it is just too much to take on in the early weeks or months of recovery. It is probably the most common cross-addiction. People who quit smoking years ago will start up within days of quitting drinking, looking for something to make them feel better.

Recovery from addiction can feel like a game of whac-a-mole?, that classic carnival game where you mallet a mole as it pops up from its hidey hole, only to have one pop up from another hole. Whack away; there is always another mole taunting you from another hole.

Cross-addictions are nothing new, but the fact that treatment centers are now addressing them during the first 30 days of recovery is.

You Say Potato, I Say Xanax

Binge eating is another classic cross-addiction in early recovery. We?re not just talking about hitting the plate of cookies at a 12-step meeting, but binge eating as a way to compensate for changes in how you feel now that you don?t have drugs or alcohol. Carbohydrates seem to be the food (drug) of choice: lots of flour, lots of sugar.

Carbohydrate binging can lead to massive weight gain in the first few months of recovery. We know that when a recovering addict leaves treatment 20 pounds heavier than when they came in, they are likely on the road to a serious cross-addiction. It?s critical to address this type of substitution behavior immediately, or the recovering addict can easily tip the scales into obesity in a few months.

What do cookies, chips, and pints of mocha chip have in common with drugs and alcohol? ?Extensive animal research has confirmed that addiction to sugar is a real phenomenon that is mediated by endogenous opiates and can be blocked by opiate antagonists. In addition, carbohydrate loading increases the synthesis of brain serotonin, improving mood and decreasing anxiety. Overeating becomes just one more form of self-medication.

From Healed to Round-Heeled

Another way we see recovering addicts compensate when they lose their drug of choice is through sexual acting out. If this behavior happens in treatment it can be very destructive to the therapeutic environment, and it is even more destructive if not addressed before the client returns home. In fact, unaddressed compulsive sexual behavior can be an enormous trigger for relapse with drugs and alcohol.

If the behavior escalates to sex addiction, the recovering person may use drugs and alcohol to mute feelings of shame and guilt. They may begin to use alcohol to calm their nerves if they are looking for anonymous sex partners on the Internet or through mobile ?hook up? apps.

Whatever the cross-addiction might be ? food, sex, gambling, shopping, compulsive exercise, or the like ? the drive is the same. The recovering addict wants to feel better, which often means they want to feel less. Drugs, nicotine, and carbohydrates all happily oblige by altering serotonin levels in the brain.

The Brain Seeks Pleasure

What can the science of addiction tell us about cross-addictions? The American Society of Addiction Medicine?has made clear that regardless of the source of the addiction (substance or behavior), the result is the same: a pattern of destructive behavior that includes a compelling craving for the substance or activity; a negative impact on health, self-esteem, family, relationships, finances, or career; and an inability to stop the behavior despite those adverse consequences.

Dirk Hanson, author of ?The Chemical Carousel,? has written a great piece on ?neuroaddiction? and how the addicted brain is different from the nonaddicted brain.

He points out one of the most important truths about addiction: It is both a cause and a consequence of those brain changes.

I have seen cross-addiction in many forms, but it always comes back to this very human susceptibility to any substance or behavior that impacts the reward centers of the brain. We like to feel good. Some people don?t feel very good. Drugs, carbs, alcohol, cigarettes, and the big win at the craps table make a lot of those people who don?t feel very good much of the time feel really good for a brief moment.

Unless treatment programs address the underlying psychiatric issues that compel the addict to find some way, any way, to feel what they often self-describe as ?normal,? relapse will continue to be a common hallmark of addiction.

The only way to win the whac-a-mole? game is to rack up points: The better you recognize the clues, the faster you whack that mole back into its hole and the more points you get. To thrive in recovery, you must spot those cross-addictions quickly, not slip into denial, and address them through positive outlets, nonaddictive psychopharmacological interventions, and effective behavioral therapy.

David Sack, M.D., is board certified in psychiatry, addiction psychiatry, and addiction medicine. He is the CEO of Elements Behavioral Health, a network of addiction treatment programs that include rehab centers in Malibu, Los Angeles, Tennessee, and Florida. ?You can follow Dr. Sack on Twitter.

The feds will run Texas' health insurance exchange ? Off the Kuff

by Charles Kuffner.

That seems to be where we?re headed.

Texas is almost alone among the nation?s largest states in failing to start work on a key piece of the Affordable Care Act, as legislators and state agencies follow Gov. Rick Perry?s wish to delay action until after a Supreme Court ruling and the November election.

?Politics superseded good policy,? state Rep. Garnet Coleman, D-Houston, said of the inaction on creating an exchange to help small businesses and individuals buy health insurance.
Texas is one of nine states identified by the Kaiser Family Foundation ? other than Florida, the others are mostly small, with relatively few uninsured residents ? as having made ?no significant progress? toward establishing an exchange. A Perry spokeswoman said there are no plans to change that.

?(Perry) feels the health care bill is unconstitutional and misguided,? spokeswoman Lucy Nashed said. ?There are no plans to implement an exchange.?

But analysts say the delay makes it more likely that the state will miss a Jan. 1, 2013, deadline for proving a state exchange is on track. If it?s not, the federal government will impose its own exchange.

State Rep. John Zerwas tried unsuccessfully to pass a bill last year that would have established an exchange in Texas, but it went nowhere as Perry expressed his opposition to it. If President Obama loses in November, or if SCOTUS throws out enough of the Affordable Care Act to cripple or kill it, then Perry will get his wish and will be able to continue blissfully ignoring the needs of the millions of Texans who lack health insurance. If not, he?ll have no one to blame but himself when the feds set up shop.

There is another possibility. The federal exchange is subject to the same Republican nihilism as anything else, and some states that are making progress towards establishing their own exchanges have experienced bumps in the road. It would not shock me if that January 1, 2013, deadline gets pushed back in the face of facts on the ground, thus giving the Texas Lege a second chance to get something going. Whether they get clearance to take advantage of such a scenario or not is another story.

Learn How Internet Marketing Can Boost Your Business | welcome ...

Those who are early in their IM careers can sometimes be hard to deal with if they are not willing to learn things on their own. Just imagine taking a complete newbie and trying to explain absolutely everything on seo marketing company. So it is not a good idea to just wade into anything without taking time to learn and get a feel that your knowledge is sufficient to keep you out of trouble. In fact, today?s discussion will be on topics that will not give you all the necessary background about them. Beginners will almost never realize what we have just explained to you, and now you have perhaps your first edge over so many others. So it would be a good idea to discover more on your own before you launch a complete campaign. There is no doubt that the internet has had a positive effect on many aspects of our daily lives. Everything from communication to business and many things in between have been changed forever. These days, shopping has become easier than ever before. Why drive all the way to the bookstore, only to find that the book you wanted wasn?t in stock, when you can buy any title you want right from the comfort of your own home? The internet offers so many advantages that entrepreneurs know marketing their products online can mean great benefits and business growth. The power of the internet can allow them to promote a product or service effectively without the need to spend huge money on advertising costs. If you already own a real-world business, then you can reap the benefits of shifting some or all of your business online. While it may take a little time to grow your online presence initially, the time and effort you invest will reap rewards in terms of extra sales and revenue in the long run. This is the magic of Internet marketing where you no longer need to limited in any way and can have new frontiers to conquer. This article will look at some of the stronger benefits of internet marketing and how it can help you gain an advantage over traditional forms of marketing. The best thing about an internet business is that you don?t need a large budget to get started. This is not the case with just about any other kind of business. Traditional businesses usually require several thousand dollars to even get started. That is only for a low cost business; if you have more ambitious plans, you?d need even more, getting into five or even six figures. Internet marketing is the opportunity where you can avoid these financial requirements. An average Joe can go out there, start a website and turn into a million dollar powerhouse. Now, don?t get the idea that it will be easy from the beginning; you do have to learn the ropes of internet marketing. Yet you will not be limited by not having money to put into the business. If you have what it takes, you can reach really high. You can, for example, find affiliate programs, in which you get paid commission for marketing and selling for various companies. You can start doing that today, completely free of cost. Even though there are paid advertising options on the Internet, you don?t have to rely on them as you can use the many free methods such as article marketing, forum marketing, and blogging to get into business. Anytime you are discovering a marketing or advertising method for the first time, it is almost always helpful to withhold judgment about it. You probably know that a great many will overlook or ignore this encouragement, but all that matters is what you will do or are willing to do. A great many people are far too cynical and skeptical about online marketing methods and maybe even Gold Coast Personal Trainers ? we do not know. You will always need to carefully assess anything new, though, and that means you have to base your decisions on research, first. But the thing is, once you have been burned a few times you start to wake up. Maybe it is just survival of the fittest and those who succeed are the ones who use common sense in business along with other qualities. There are many marketers who deal with beginners and these businesses are honest and legitimate, but it is the small percentage who are not honest that cause perception problems. Even though we are presenting you with these techniques, we will tell you to have restraint and continue to learn more about them. What you will usually end up doing is not wasting your time and money. Apart from what we discussed above, Internet marketing has low operating costs. You can, in fact, spend less than twenty-five dollars per week and cover all of your expenses. This will cover a variety of small costs such as your web hosting and some other online tools you may need such as an autoresponder and a merchant account. Now it cannot be denied that investing less money in your internet business may mean that it will take longer for it to flourish. With traditional businesses, however, you don?t even have the option of getting started without money. In any other situation, you don?t have cost free options when it comes to marketing. These are some of the reasons why internet marketing can be the ideal business. It?s the fastest way to test your ads, promote your product or simply sell someone else?s product and make money. The number of ways you can operate this kind of business are endless. Internet marketing is perfect for anyone who dreams of a business that can be run on auto-pilot from anywhere in the world. We know huge numbers of web businesses have integrated this into their business, but what are your thoughts about it? One thing is certain, though, and that is perhaps 99% of any kind of online venture can stand to have more promotional methods put to work. Sure, we all like to enjoy life and the fruits of our labor, but you should not let things get out of hand in that regard. You can look at this as a type of business insurance as well as life insurance when you take measures to protect your online income. It is tempting to fall into the whole thing about an autopilot income and business using kit homes qld or some other approach, but beware because that can be dangerous. In some ways business online is like some kind of race that never ends, and that is definitely the way it will always be.
